MMO Times: The One Before the Hundredth

mmo-headerIssue 99 – As the subject suggests, I am on the verge of having the 100th post, it’s crazy that I have written nearly 100 of these. I know it has been a while since the last post (in fact it was Pi Day) but (as every single person will tell you over and over) life gets a little busy when you have a newborn in the house. Despite all the colloquialisms we are settled into our new routine and so I am now finding the pockets of time in which I can still partake in my various hobbies. Since I don’t sleep that much anyway, I find that I can still play my games, write my blogs and read gaming news – it was all just a matter of modifying the times in which I can do that.

Really, not much has happened in the past few weeks anyway. Most people already know about the WildStar Open Beta (I”m curious about your impressions if you are playing in the beta) as well as its headstart launch coming up May 31st; though so far I’ve heard its kinda “meh”. Amazon has some discounts on a few titles if you are looking for something new to try. SWTOR devs have some big promises coming. A game called Darkfall has an interesting mechanic to crafting (that I wish other MMOs would adopt).

Darkfall Makes Crafting Professional

Posted 5.16.14 – I have not heard of Darkfall before but after reading this article I really like the mechanic they have introduced for the crafting system. Players can place “Crafting Orders” with other players (which include providing the materials). By completing the order (which happens on a first-come-first-serve basis) the player completing the orders can early points in that profession. Based on what I was reading it doesn’t look like the player fulfilling the order can earn any cash from it, but I think adding that component into it (assuming the player is at max on their crafting skill) would be a great mechanic to add to crafting and something all MMOs should consider implementing *cough*WoW*cough*.

SWTOR Promises Big for Player Housing

Posted 5.18.14 – In the next big content patch for The Old Republic, the dev’s are promising that players will not be disappointed with the player housing feature that will be added to the game. Galactic Strongholds (which is their euphemism for player housing) is boasting as a mechanic like no other MMO has; that is a pretty bold claim. I admit that I have been working some numbers and I may be returning to this game this summer, expansion and all so I’m very curious how their player housing mechanic will work out.

WoW Adding Class Accessaries

Posted 5.20.14 – There hasn’t been much to talk about with World of Warcraft. We know there is a new expansion coming but details of that expansion have been coming out slowly. In fact it seems to have driven a lot of folks away (about 400k). The latest treat that I think seems kind of neat is the concept of class specific accessories. Click on the link to see some concept art. Basically we may see things like quivers for hunters, spell books for casters. The look of each accessory will change as the character levels. My understanding so far is that this is not something you equip, its just cosmetic.

Amazon Sale On Defiance, FFXI, FFXIV Until 5/31

Posted 5.23.14 – If you have been looking for something new to play Amazon is offering a tempting sale on a few popular titles. Defiance, Warframe, FFXI and FFXIV with sales as large as 50% off. There are online game codes you can get for under$5 so perhaps there is something there to satiate your gaming lust. You better decide quickly because you have until the end of the month before the sale ends (which is this coming Saturday). I have provided the link to the Massively post which has the list, pricing and links, to all the titles included with this sale.

WildStar Getting Lots of Attention

Posted 5.23.14 – As I said in the preface, the feedback I’ve heard about the beta has been “meh”. In fact, if I may paraphrase a friend of mine, it will be better when its free-2-play. Despite what I’ve heard, this post I found seems to indicate to the contrary. I took this quote from the article, which says its “like current-reigning MMO champWorld of Warcraft meets colorful-and-awesome FPS game Borderlands”. An interesting perspective, perhaps even intriguing.
