A Wicked Fun Trip

I’m way overdue for a new post. There are reasons for the draught, which I will get into a little later. Recently we went out of town for a family baptism. Instead of staying for just the weekend, we saved several hundred dollars and stayed three nights. We left early Friday morning and returned late Monday night. The destination … Boston, Massachusetts. I have never been to Boston before so we made the best of the extended stay. It was, pardon the pun, a wicked fun trip!

America’s Birthplace

Old State House, the site of the Boston Massacre that started a revolution

If you are an American history buff, then I’m sure you are aware of the role Boston played in the Revolutionary War. I am, by no means, an expert on American history, but I remember most things from history class. Boston has a rich and amazing history and not just it’s role in our independence but also how it became a city. I’m not going to talk about everything I learned about it’s history because I encourage you to go experience it for yourself.

I highly recommend taking the Boston Duck Tour. You will learn all kinds of historical facts not only about Boston but about America too. I also recommend taking the Freedom Trail, which is a historical path through the city. We did not have a chance to do this but it’s on the list for next time.

Other Sites and Activities

Aside from taking the Duck Tour, we tried to do as many other “Boston things” as we could. Every day I tried clam chowder at a different place. My favorite is the bowl I had at the Warren Tavern in Charlestown. Fun fact, founded in 1780, the Warren Tavern is the oldest tavern in the country. George Washington once hung out at this place and it’s also believed to be haunted.

Had a beer at Cheers

We also saw a game at Fenway Park, against the the Yankees. While the Red Sox are essentially in last place, that night they did win 3-0. We rode on the swan boats, had lunch at Cheers, toured Havard University, visited the Children’s Museum (which is next door to the Boston Tea Party Museum). There is more to do than I expected so we will have to go back.

Boston is a very clean city. There is no trash on the streets or in the alleyways. I rarely saw any litter. I’d say the one thing I didn’t like about our trip to Boston is an unexpected souvenir.

Covid.

We almost made it three years without ever catching covid. We went to Disney, attended weddings, parties, a 5K and never caught it. One trip to Boston and BAM! This is the reason for a delay in my posts.

Despite catching the ‘rona, I’d still do it all again.

/cheers (heh heh, how fitting a sign off this time 🙂 )

Tropical Beaches are Not My Ideal Vacation

Not My Ideal Vacation

Is this your ideal vacation?

We are having some crazy weather so naturally everyone starts thinking about summer and vacation time. When everyone talks about going on their ideal vacation the first thing everyone thinks of is the beach. However, my ideal vacation is not the beach. In fact my ideal vacation is rarely anyplace near an ocean. I’m not saying I hate the beach. On the contrary, I think the sounds of crashing waves and a warm breeze on my face at night is incomparable. As long as the temperature isn’t much higher than 75 degrees, I’ll read a book outside in that nice breeze … in the shade.

I don’t tan, I burn. In fact I burn quite easily, so spending a lot of time out in the sun isn’t ideal without lathering up on sunblock as if I were an infant. So shade is my friend. Therefore going into the water isn’t a common occurrence. Actually going into the water is pretty much out of the question. I don’t know what lurks on the ground, beneath the water. Who knows what creature or flotsam I might step on! Then when you leave the water, and step in dry sand with wet feet!

Then There Is All That Sand!

Anakin and I are on the same page

If I have to pick my least favorite thing about the beach, it would be the sand. All that Sand! Sand! Sand! Sand! (I’m channeling Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch there). Sand on your feet! Sand on your legs! Sand on your clothes! Sand on your hands!!! It gets everywhere; and just when you think you washed it all off, you find more! It follows you home!

You can’t wear sneakers because sand gets all over them; and no matter how long you bang them against the wall, you never seem to get all of the sand off. You can’t wear sandals/flip-flops because then sand gets inside them and your feet constantly feel dirty. If I wear sandals on the beach the first thing I want to do when I leave is shower; and throw my shoes in the washing machine.

So What Is My Ideal Vacation?

While I do love the serenity of relaxing near the beach, there are other places that can provide the same luxury without the presence of gritty silica. I’ve spent time in the mountains, hiking or horse back riding, and I also found the same tranquility as the beach. However I don’t think even the mountains is my ideal vacation. Yes I do enjoy the quiet to do some reading but I really enjoy culture and history. Traveling abroad is probably my ideal vacation, albeit expensive. Spending time in Paris or London provides both culture and history. In fact I would enjoy visiting any place in the EU.

When the wallet can’t handle international travel, there are plenty of places, domestically, that can provide cultural and historical value. The Smithsonian comes to mind immediately. Just spending some time in a city that isn’t close to home. New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington DC etc. I could easily spend a weekend in Chicago; especially during baseball and/or football season. So if there are historical landmarks and locations, museums of art and/or technology, and an immersive culture, that sounds like a great vacation.

What about you? Beach? Or something with a little less mess?

Turkey Holiday 2015

florida-houseIt’s been a while since I have posted something. It wasn’t from a lack of subject matter (which has often given me writer’s block in the past). No, this time it was warm climates and crashing waves. I spent another Thanksgiving along the shores of southern Florida. I’m not a beach person. As far as I’m concerned silicon belongs in circuit boards, not stuck between my toes and in the crevasses of my feet (I’ll let that visual sink in).

I was in Fort Lauderdale last week, staying in the house pictured above. While the beach was, literally, across the street, I only visited it once. Actually, probably one of the best highlights from the trip was spending 3 hours in Sun Life Stadium. Granted the Dolphins lost that game, but watching a game in the home stadium has long been a bucket list item for me. I mean, how often can you cross off a bucket list item?

Everyday it was in the mid-70’s and a hot tub was just beyond the door, which I did use quite often last week. In fact my post-Thankgiving meal activity was sitting in the hot tub (before watching the Bears and Packers game). A steaming, bubbling hot tub is very cathartic both mentally and physically.

Despite the warm climate, after a week I did long for home. I don’t mind vacationing in Florida, but I don’t think its a place where I could live. I don’t mind the seasonal weather changes that marks the passage of time. After a week, sleeping in your own bed sounds just as refreshing as a Florida vacation sounded prior to leaving for vacation. So I’m back in chilly Ohio, ready to get back to work.

I hope everyone else had a great Thanksgiving too, no matter where you celebrated it.

My First Hurricane

arthur_ocmdI wasn’t really in the worst part of the storm. I was in Ocean City, Maryland which was just on the very, very edge of Hurricane Arthur. My in-laws had another sandy vacation for the family, this time in the penthouse on the 17th floor of a place on the beach in Ocean City. I don’t know what it is about fireworks on the beach that makes the 4th of July so much more spectacular. (If you have access to the gallery on the family website you can see some of the pictures I took).

The picture on the left is taken from the balcony that overlooked the beach on the day that Hurricane Arthur was moving north of the Carolina’s. The worst that we really got of the storm were some high winds (which were only about 25-30 mph) and a bunch of rain. Be that as it may, it is the closest I have come to being in an actual hurricane.

I’m not really a beach person, something about sand getting everywhere, but there is plenty of other things to do in Ocean City, MD that even I enjoyed. Of course I got an opportunity to grill out which I always enjoy doing with the ocean splashing in the background. The boardwalk is kind of fun to walk, granted there are quite a few people there that like to do the same thing. There are so many putt-putt courses you could literally play a different course every day of the week.

I tried golfing for the third time in my life. I do think I can really get the hang of it so I may be trying to find a decent set of clubs on Craig’s List to start practicing. I really don’t want to spend a bunch of money on clubs when I’m still learning to play the game. I think playing a round of golf with both of my brother-in-laws during these family vacations could become a great tradition.

It was a great week to spend up in New England, I hope my nieces had as much fun as the rest of us.
