Throne of Glass Series

Throne of Glass cover art

As part of this year’s reading challenge, I have finally finished reading the Throne of Glass series. It is a fantasy series comprised of 8 novels written by Sarah Maas. Seven of the books are the main story and one book, The Assassin’s Blade, is a prequel. The series follows Celaena Sardothien, Adarlan’s most deadly assassin as she takes on a king and evil dark forces. Along the way, she discovers more about her past and a long-lost legacy.

This is a good series, one that I would consider reading again. Celaena is a cool and interesting character. It has all the makings of excellent fantasy; mythical creatures, a solid magic system, cohesive world-building, and lots of plot twists. I don’t read too many female authors who have built a solid fantasy world like Sarah Maas.

Setting Expectations for Skeleton Crew

Jude Law in Skeleton Crew

We are only a week away from the next Star Wars streaming show. I’m sure it will be ripped apart and ridiculed by TFM. They can’t help themselves but watch something they hate just so they can complain about it online. I plan to watch it with an open mind and complete enjoyment. Before the series starts I’d like to take a moment to set expectations for Skeleton Crew.

This series takes place five years after Return of the Jedi; at about the same time as The Mandalorian. Since this show takes place during “the Mandoverse”, it’s possible we may see some of these characters again in upcoming projects (i.e. Mandalorian & Grogu). The series stars Jude Law and has the essence of The Goonies in space so I think it might appeal to us GenXers. I get the impression that this show will be tailored toward a much younger audience. It won’t be as dark and foreboding as the other series. We will probably see more witty characters and the occasional silly gaffe to entertain the younger generation.

I do expect to see some “fan service” for the older generations of fans in the form of cameos and Easter eggs. I’ll try to provide episodic recaps to help point out those fun moments.

The Skeleton Crew will be 8 episodes with the first two premiering December 2nd (was December 3rd) at 6pm PT on Disney+

Halloween Month (2024)

Grogu pumpkin

October is the month for scary movies and candy. Hopefully, I indulge more in the former and less in the latter. However, I’m not a huge fan of scary movies. I’ll watch films that are maybe a little eerie, absurd, or fun but I generally avoid slashers and the deeply disturbing. The occasional thriller isn’t bad. Just like movie selections for Christmas, there will always be default choices. At any rate, let’s get on with the list.

Final Skeleton Crew Trailer

This will be the last official trailer before the series premiers next month. I think I’ve said this before, this show looks like it will be something fun to watch. It should remind us of what drew us to Star Wars as a kid while drawing more young fans in.

For those of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, this will feel like Goonies in space … and I’m here for it! This will be part of the official canon but I’m guessing we won’t see a lot of direct ties to the Skywalker Saga. I do expect a few Easter eggs/fan service elements.

I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be fun.

Skeleton Crew premieres December 3rd on Disney+

Martial Arts Month (2024) – Wax On, Wax Off

If the words “Wax On, Wax Off” don’t mean anything to you then you might be too young for this list. Growing up in the 80’s it was a mantra all kids knew. “Don’t forget to breathe, in through nose, out through mouth.” We all wanted to be Danny LaRusso and we all wanted a Mr. Miyagi to teach us where karate comes from. These movies took me back.

I was in Taekwondo more than 20 years ago and I still remember some of it. I hope to convince my daughter to take some form of self-defense and I might even join her. Despite my age, my knees are much better today than they were when I first took Taekwondo. All of the running I have been doing has made them stronger. Anyway, enough reminiscing, let’s talk about the Karate Kid movies.

Movie Review: Deadpool & Wolverine

Directed by: Shawn Levy
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman
My Rating:

It’s rare for us to be able to see one movie in the theater but to see two is even more extraordinary. I know this movie has been out for a while and most have probably already seen it. If you have not seen it Deadpool & Wolverine will be available for streaming on-demand October 1st.

As you can tell from my rating, I really enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed just about everything about it. I love the fact that it doesn’t take itself too seriously; I love the action and the comedy; I love the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

The general plot, without giving away too much, is that Deadpool needs to save his family and friends and there is only one person that can help him do that.

Prior to watching this movie, I would advise that you should probably watch both seasons of Loki. Obviously, the prior two films would be helpful as well as Doctor Strange.

If you have seen the previous two films then you know what to expect. This film is equally as obscene and has just as much gratuitous violence. It is obvious these guys enjoy playing these characters. I think they had just as much fun making this film as I did watching it.
