jumping from 2024 to 2025

We are now a quarter of a century into the new millennium. It’s hard to believe. Thankfully 2024 wasn’t as somber as the year before. In fact, 2024 was a fairly normal year. There are a couple of notable moments that I will get to in the sections below.

I’ll make it easier to skip to sections this year.

In Memoriam

This year, we had to say goodbye to some notable celebrities. It was especially tough on us GenXers and Star Wars fans. Let’s start with the notable deaths from the Star Wars franchise. We lost the voice of Darth Vader. James Earl Jones, an icon that spans many generations, passed away at 93. My November movie selections this year were films he was in. The Star Wars franchise also lost Carl Weathers (76). While he was new to the Star Wars family, his iconic role as Greef Karga in The Mandalorian series will never be forgotten. He is also known for his role as Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise.

Others we lost include Glynis Johns (100 – the mom in Mary Poppins), Shelley Duvall (75 – The Shining, Popeye), the great Dame Maggie Smith (89 – Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter), Bob Newhart (78) and Donald Sutherland (88). GenX was hit especially hard with the deaths of Richard Simmons (76), Shannon Doherty (53 – 90210), Tony Todd (69 – Candyman), Martin Mull (80 – Mr. Mom), and Teri Garr (79 – also in Mr. Mom as well as Young Frankenstein).

Toby Keith

In sports and music we lost some pretty big icons. Baseball legends Pete Rose (83), Rickey Henderson (65), and Willy Mays (93) passed away this year. Also in sports, we lost O.J. Simpson (76) and Jerry West (86). In country music, we lost Kris Kristofferson (88) and Toby Keith (62). Of all the deaths this year, including James Earl Jones, the death of Toby Keith hit me the hardest. I’ve been a fan of his music since “How Do You Like Me Now” in 1999. It makes me sad to think we won’t have any more new music from him.

RIP to these amazing people.

2024 Year In Review: Movies

The number of movies we are seeing in the theater is going up, which is great. People need to get off their couches and back out to the theater because the experience is unmatched. I know the ticket prices are not what they used to be so pick your movies carefully. In fact, for that reason, there are a couple of new movies we saw this year via streaming services. We saw two movies in the theater and two via streaming services.

The two movies we saw in the theater are as follows. Click on the title to read my review.

We watched the following two movies on their respective streaming services. Again, you can click on the title to read the review.

What movies coming out in 2025 will be worth seeing in the theaters?

2024 Wellness and Health

I won’t have the typical stats this year because I made a pretty big change. A goal I set for myself in 2024 was to run my first half marathon and I did it! After completing the race, I retired my FitBit. I was unable to find an app that will provide all the statistics I need to provide an accurate total steps and miles walked/ran. I have an app called “Steps” but there are several weeks worth of data it did not record.

I’m confident that I still completed my Run to Mordor challenge, I’m just not sure specifically what date. I am going to try to keep this Steps app from “forgetting” any day while I search for a different app. If there is one that is worth the money, I would consider buying one but I don’t want anything with a subscription model.

Now that we have reviewed 2024, let’s set some goals for 2025.
