Title: You Have A Lot to Learn About Pirates
Directed by: Jake Schreier
Runtime: 45 minutes
After learning the identity of SM-33’s previous captain, Jod begins to show his true colors. This episode leans a bit more into the pirate theme and confirms a few things.
Spoilers Ahead!!!
We learn that the parents know that At Attin is hidden on purpose and are responsible for keeping it that way. Granted, I am curious why a planet that produces old currency is relevant in the post-Empire era. However, the adults are likely unaware of what has happened in the galaxy outside the barrier. The adults failed attempt at espionage is also mildly amusing.
We also learn that Wim’s mom is dead or at least that’s what he’s been told and SM-33’s former captain is Tak Rennod.
Episode 5 Easter Eggs
There are a few fun Easter eggs in this episode and I want to start with Captain Rennod. While the character of Tak Rennod is not an Easter Egg, his name is. Rennod is the reverse spelling of Donner, which is the last name of the director of The Goonies (Richard Donner). Assuming this was intentional it further confirms that The Goonies is an influence for this series. Also all the booby traps is an obvious homage to Indiana Jones.
Further evidence that supports the pirate theme (and/or Pirates of the Caribbean) is when Jod invokes the pirate code to become Captain. This is also an interesting turn for Jod’s character.
The Star Wars related easter eggs begin with a familiar quote. Jod says to Wim “your focus determines your reality” which probably sounds familiar. It is the tragic advice Qui-Gon Jin gives to young Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace.
Another subtle Easter Egg is the scene with the Hutt in the mud pool. If you look closely there is a familiar tattoo on the chin. This is likely one of the twins we saw in The Book of Boba Fett. This series takes place during the same timeframe as that series so it’s conceivable that this could be one of the twins.
