James Gunn’s story about the son of Krypton has its first teaser trailer. It’s not often that I post many trailers that don’t pertain to Star Wars, but maybe I should. Perhaps I will try to do more of it as long as it’s something I think is interesting and I have some thoughts to share. Without further ado, here is James Gunn’s Superman teaser trailer.
This is going to be the first film in the new DC era with James Gunn at the helm and this trailer suggests he is off to a good start. The casting for this film looks great starting with somewhat unknown actor David Corenswet playing the titular character. Granted, he may not necessarily be “somewhat unknown” to some, but he’s unknown to me.
Casting and Krypto
David Corenswet is the latest to join the elite list of live-action Superman actors. While I’m not quite sold yet on him as Superman, his portrayal of Clark Kent does look pretty good in this trailer. The remaining cast is pretty solid but I do have a couple of exciting callouts.
Nathan Fillion will bring the Guy Gardner Green Lantern to life in this film. He always brings a lot of charm and charisma to his roles mainly because he’s a big nerd. Speaking of browncoats, Alan Tudyk is also listed with an unknown character. My guess is he will provide a voice-over. Will Reeve will also make a cameo. He is the son of the GenX Superman, Christopher Reeve.
It looks like we will also get our first live-action cinematic appearance of Krypto. It’s hard to tell from the trailer if Gunn used a real dog or if it’s CG. If he’s fully CG then I wonder if Alan Tudyk is in the cast to provide the sound effects, much like he did for Hei-Hei in Moana.
The casting that has me most excited is Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Hoult is an amazing and underappreciated actor. He could bring us a Lex Luthor that will rival Jesse Eisenberg’s from Batman v Superman.
This trailer is intriguing enough that I’m thinking about seeing it on July 11th. This is only a teaser. We will get a full trailer sometime between now and July so I’ll be watching out for that.
“The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle.”
