For July we are back to movies. My top 5 80’s Comedy Movies. The movies from the 80’s are probably some of my favorite movies, and it’s really all thanks to John Hughes. So many of them withstand the test of time. Plus its so much fun to reminisce about a simpler time. There are so many great comedies from the 80’s, which made this list difficult to whittle down to merely 5. I had to go with which movies I find myself quoting often or seeking out a giphy or being able to still recite a specific scene from the movie. So here they are, in no particular order (BTW, John Hughes wrote and/or directed 3 of them).

• The Great Outdoors – this movie has to be one of John Candy’s and Dan Aykroyd’s best
• Good Morning, Vietnam – an early Robin Williams film, saw this in high school and loved it since
• Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – this is a cult 80’s classic. I used to watch this anytime it was on TBS (my parents hated it)
• The ‘Burbs – probably one of my all time favorite Tom Hanks films
• Planes, Trains and Automobiles – I can still recite Steve Martins reaction at the car rental counter

Obviously, with so many movies to choose from, there are definitely some honorable mentions. I almost feel guilty leaving Caddyshack off the top 5 because it’s freaking Caddyshack. I’m sure Rodney Dangerfield is turning over in his grave. Crocodile Dundee is another one of those movies that, to this day, I would watch if TNT or TBS happened to be playing it. Hands down my favorite Paul Hogan movie, which isn’t terribly difficult since Paul Hogan didn’t make a lot of movies. So many good movies from the 80’s; I probably could have made a top 10 for my favorite 80’s movies. What are your favorite 80’s comedies?

Comedy is probably my favorite genre of movie, and since I have so many favorite comedies I chose the top 5 90s comedy movies for the month of April. In a future Top 5 post I will post 80s comedy movies. I was born in the 80s so many of those films I couldn’t watch until it was well into the 90s. Picking a favorite comedy is tough. A couple of these on the list have sequels. Any move with a sequel is inclusive.

So here they are, in no particular order:

• Grumpy Old Men – Both movies. Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and Burgess Meredith are comedy gold!
• Ace Ventura – Again, both movies. These are my favorite Jim Carrey movies.
• Austin Powers – All the movies. I know I don’t include a trilogy but I’m making the exception for these hilarious movies.
• The Hudsucker Proxy – I feel this is an underrated and underappreciated movie but its great “you know, for kids!”
• The Big Lebowski – This is a classic! It even has its own holiday (Day of the Dude)

Again, choosing comedies from the 90s is tough. There are so many great movies. In fact there are a few honorable mentions for this Top 5 as well. Office Space definitely deserves mentioning; I’ve worked for a company that almost mimicked this film. I do love the Crocadile Dundee movies but a nice little hidden Paul Hogan gem is Lightning Jack. It’s like Crocadile Dundee in the wild west with a solid performance by Cuba Gooding Jr.

This month I chose the top 5 drama movies. This list is a little easier as drama isn’t really my favorite genre, but there are some great drama movies. I still chose non-franchised movies to make the list easier to filter as well as a few other parameters. The soundtrack plays a big role as well as surprise plot twists and caliber of acting.

• A Beautiful Mind – I’m a sucker for a biopic and I love the soundtrack!
• Fight Club – I love the twist ending and Edward Norton is amazing
• V for Vendetta – I watch this every November 5th. I just love this film.
• A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood – A recent movie about  the power of Mr Rogers’ influence.
• The Score – Another excellent Edward Norton performance with Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando

I have a couple of honorable mentions for this category as well. The Road to Perdition starring Tom Hanks is really underrated and under appreciated; a wonderful 1930’s mob drama. The King’s Speech (another true story) with superb performances by Colin Firth (as King George VI) and Geoffrey Rush. So there you have it, my top 5 drama movies (as of March 2020).

I am a huge movie buff so picking my favorite top 5 action/adventure movies is very difficult. In fact, in order to even whittle the list down to 5 I have to set some further qualifications. So for this top 5 list I chose movies that are non-franchised. A “non-franchised” is any movie that is not part of a trilogy or large collection of related films (ex: James Bond or the Marvel movies that make up the Infinity Saga). It’s also based on if I were channel surfing and these movies came on, I would be inclined to continue watching without starting over. This list is in no particular order.

• Serenity – because it’s Firefly! Browncoats for life!
• The Rock – I quote this move, almost, daily
• Gladiator – this is just an amazing movie, including the soundtrack
• Tombstone – I saw this movie in my Sophomore or Junior year of high school and I’ve loved it since
• Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) – because of the Shelby Mustang (aka “Eleanor”)!

I actually want to watch all these movies just merely by building this list. In fact, as I was building this list I felt like a few other movies deserve some honorable mentions (i.e. movies that almost made the list). Chris Evans performance in The Losers is one of the best parts of the film. While I do not care for the type of music DMX performs, his nerdy character is Exit Wounds is my favorite. Finally, The Fifth Element because it’s just a fun movie to watch and it’s quite quotable.
