Ahsoka Part Two

Title: Toil and Trouble
Directed By: Steph Green
Runtime: 44 minutes

Now that we have begun the Part One discussion let’s get into the details for Ahsoka Part Two. This picks up not long after the duel at the end of the first episode in which someone again survives a “Qui-Gon Killer” (I just coined that). I mean that tongue-in-cheek because I really love the first episode.

Before I get too far into it, I want to quickly point out that this episode is directed by Steph Green instead of Filoni. She is not new to directing Star Wars, she directed the second episode of The Book of Boba Fett (one of my favorite episodes from that season). She has also directed one-off episodes from various other series including Watchmen, Luke Cage, Scandal, and Billions.

Warning! The following contains spoilers from Ahsoka Part Two (and Rebels).

purrgil

Morgan has the Star Map and now knows approximately where Thrawn has been taken by the purrgils. However, thanks to some of Sabine’s ingenuity she discovers the origin of the HK droids that attacked her and stole said Star Map. Ahsoka and Hera are on the hunt because that Star Map will also lead them to Ezra. We hope.

So far, the lightsaber duels are all pretty fantastic! You can tell Rosario’s intense training is paying off. They are so fluid and well-choreographed.

Guest Stars and David Tennant is a Treat

Ok, we all know that David Tennant is the best Doctor and he’s done other amazing things (e.g. Jessica Jones, Broadchurch, Good Omens, etc.). Having him back as Huyang is so great! One of the many things that Lucasfilm does well is droids. It doesn’t even matter if they cannot speak their personality shines through the binary (e.g. BD-1 and NED-B). We all loved Huyang from the Clone Wars but having him around all the time is an absolute delight! The droids get all the best dialog.

Another name drop/easter egg is Corellia. The last time we saw live-action Corellia was in the Solo movie. It looks to be in much better condition under the New Republic than it did 20+ years ago when Han and Q’ira dreamed of leaving the planet. On Corellia we meet our first guest star, Peter Jacobson who plays Myn Weaver, the “businessman” who oversees the construction of the star ships. Yes, it’s Dr. Taub for you House fans!

Comments on the Casting

I’ll be honest when I saw the casting of Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Natasha Liu Bordizzo for Hera and Sabine (respectively), I was a bit skeptical. I’m familiar with Winstead only because she is Ewan McGregor’s wife and I knew nothing about Natasha. After these first two episodes, my mind is made up.

I love Winstead as “Mother” Hera. She provides that nurturing and matriarchal spirit that we saw, and loved, in Rebels. Natasha must have watched every episode of Rebels and did her due diligence for her role as Sabine. She is nailing every single facial expression. This is going to be a really great series!

Ahsoka in Rebels finale

I hate to nitpick and this is hardly worth mentioning at all. The scene near the end of this episode, when Ahsoka shows up to pick up Sabine, is that a live-action recreation of the same scene in the final episode of Rebels? It was almost an exact match. Almost. If this is supposed to be the same scene then Dave decided to change Ahsoka’s wardrobe because it’s not the same, and there’s no staff. It didn’t affect how much I enjoyed the episode, just something I noticed.

What are your thoughts on Ahsoka Part Two?

Again, I encourage you to check out Rebel Force Radio’s after-show either on their YouTube page or Spotify.
