Title: Master and Apprentice
Directed By: Dave Filoni
Runtime: 56 minutes
Since both episodes were released on the same day I originally intended to do one post discussing both. However, given the details of the episode and the easter eggs, you’re getting two. Let’s start by saying I loved Ahsoka Part One (and Part Two). This is an amazing episode to start a series. It felt like Rebels. It felt like Filoni.
Warning! The following contains spoilers for Ahsoka Part One.
First of all, a new opening crawl followed immediately by a large ship filling the screen gave me every kind of nostalgia. I literally got chills. Well done, Dave. As the opening crawl states, Ahsoka is seeking a Star Map that should provide the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn (and, presumably, Ezra Bridger).
Cameos, Reprises, and Easter Eggs
David Tennant is back as Huyang, which we already knew from the trailers. It was a wonderful surprise to see Clancy Brown reprise his role as Ryder Azadi (whom he provided the voice for in Star Wars Rebels). The biggest surprise of all, however, is Morgan Elsbeth’s origins. She’s a Nightsister of Dathomir! That is an old Clone Wars reference!
Speaking of call backs to Clone Wars and Rebels, the codename “Fulcrum” is an old codename initially used by Ahsoka during the Galactive Civil War.
Composer Kevin Kiner provided the score for The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, and Rebels, and now he’s back for Ahsoka. His score for this series is just fantastic. I let the credits roll (on both episodes) so I could listen to the music. I can’t wait for this to be on Spotify so I can listen while I work.
More Star Wars Tropes
Like Star Trek and their “red-shirts” and stormtroopers that can’t aim, Star Wars is starting to build on its TV tropes. We have another “map MacGuffin” and another character getting stabbed-in-the-abdomen-and-surviving. I’m not upset by this nor am I nitpicking but it is getting pretty redundant that everyone, except poor Qui-Gon, can survive a lightsaber to the gut.
So far these two things seem to be the only “criticism” these episodes are getting on social media. The latter seems to be getting the bulk of it. There are some pretty funny memes out there of Qui-Gon dying to the same thing that everyone else can survive.
With all that said … this is my absolute favorite part of the first episode:
What are your thoughts on Ahsoka Part One? (Stay tuned for Part Two coming soon).
Also, I highly encourage you to go listen to Rebel Force Radio’s After Show every Wednesday night at 8 pm EST. They will cover their reactions to each episode. Jason and Jimmy are a couple of great nerdy guys and I really enjoy their show. You can watch live on their YouTube channel or wait for the recording to be available on Spotify.
