June has come and gone so it’s time to check in on the progress of my goals for the year. As a reminder, my annual goals encompass three categories: Wellness goals, Reading goals, and technical skills goals. I admit that these posts provide zero informational value to anyone who reads them. It’s merely a means for me to provide accountability for pursuing my goals each year.

If you do read it and have some suggestions or feedback, I encourage you to leave a comment. Keep in mind that if you have not left a comment in the past, I will have to approve it before it appears. This is for security reasons. In the past, I’ve had to remove hundreds of spam posts therefore I changed the configuration so new comments have to be approved.

2024 Wellness Goals

I have great news and a little bad news. The great news is that I overcame my trepidation and ran the Half-Marathon. It was a lot of fun but I haven’t committed to running it again. I’ll make that decision when January comes around. A few things need to happen before I decide to run it again, including dropping a few pounds.

I’m in my 40s so losing weight is more difficult. It’s time to make some diet adjustments. I am drinking more water, which helps a lot. However, it’s the snacking that’s really hard to get under control. If I’m stressed, bored, or anxious I reach for the chips.

The half-marathon also marked the end of my Fitbit. I officially retired it and I’ve already explained why. This is where the bit of bad news comes in. I no longer have access to the level of detail the Fitbit data provided. Therefore I will not be able to track my Walk Run to Mordor progress until I find a sufficient replacement app. I’m looking for suggestions and I’m hoping to find something before the end of the year.

Reading Goals

The reading challenge progress is going pretty well. I’m about 7 books into the 12 books for the year. I haven’t read any of the books on my “read again” list and I may not get to any this year. There are quite a few new books that I want to read this year. However, there is a chance I can slip in a Dresden book. My goal is to get to a point where I can try to exclusively read physical Star Wars books next year and read other genres as ebooks.

I’ve been using the Libby app to borrow ebooks from the library. If you’ve never used the Libby app before I highly recommend it, especially if you want to read books that you don’t want to buy. I know that’s blasphemy for those bibliophiles out there but not every book I’ve read I want to read again. It’s better to only buy books that warrant it.

Technical Skills Goals

I’ve made no progress on this goal. There are a few courses I’ve taken but it was all for work and has little application to my side projects. I hope that I can try to do better in the second half of the year.
