Chapter 23 left all of us pondering what might happen in Chapter 24. I have seen a lot of different ideas on who “the spies” are because it isn’t the Shadow Council. Let’s talk about some of the Mandalorian season finale rumors and theories and discuss their probabilities. I’m not going to mention things I’ve already predicted (i.e. Thrawn’s appearance). These are in no particular order.
Din Djarin Dies
This is probably the least likely scenario. There have been various statements throughout this season such as the series title isn’t just about one Mandalorian. This implies that the show could carry on without Din Djarin. It’s safe to assume that if he were to die, Bo-Katan would carry on as Grogu’s caretaker. Given her family’s legacy, and her character’s story arcs throughout The Clone Wars, this doesn’t fit her destiny.
In fact, I might even say that Bo-Katan is more likely to die, it would be a more tragic ending to the season. When Din pledges his fealty to her until “her song is written”, this could foreshadow her death. It’s a common tv trope.
The Armorer is an Imperial Spy
This is the most popular theory right now. Chapter 23 is titled “The Spies” and many have been trying to figure out who “the spies” are. The Shadow Council is too obvious. Folks have pointed out that the spikes on her helmet match Darth Mauls. It’s conceivable that, since he is dead by this point, she carries on his legacy through Death Watch (which isn’t really gone).
I think this theory has some weight to it but part of me feels like it’s all misdirection. Maybe we are led to believe she is the spy. Personally, I like this character and I hope she isn’t a villain unless she’s an unwilling villain. It’s possible Moff Gideon has something on her to make her compliant.
If I had to guess who “the spies” are, it’s our three new Mandalorian friends who conveniently “survived the purge”.
Finale Predictions
There have been several statements made about the season finale to stir up all of these rumors. I’ve heard the finale will “hurt too much” to “fans will be cheering”. It makes me think that someone will meet their demise or alleged demise. While I said earlier that Bo-Katan could die, perhaps it only appears she is killed; or Din for that matter. Thus the “hurt too much” statement.
Then we get a special guest appearance that will avenge their death. Perhaps Ahsoka? I still stand by the idea that Chapter 24 will set up the Ahsoka series (hence Thrawn’s appearance). I like the idea that Boba Fett will make an appearance too (supposedly a second season of his series is in the works, although that is unconfirmed).
It’s possible Moff Gideon is killed in the finale and Thrawn becomes the villain for both series. However, I think he will survive, perhaps a little broken, and next season will center around his need to retaliate. Moff Gideon has only made a couple of appearances and it only seems to happen at the end of the season. We need him as the antagonist of an entire season.
I guess I don’t really have any fully-baked predictions. The writing has been great this season; it’s kept us all from getting too cocky. Given all of the misdirection this season, I think we’re all going to be caught off guard this Wednesday.
