Title: The Apostate
Director: Rick Famuyiwa
Runtime: 37 min
We’re back! It’s been over two years since we’ve gotten to talk about a new episode of The Mandalorian; to say I’m excited is a gross understatement. Without further ado, let’s get into The Mandalorian Chapter 17!
Din Djarin is an apostate for having removed his helmet. He wishes to atone so that he can be reinstated as a Mandalorian. In order to do that he must pool his resources and gather the necessary intel.
Spoilers Ahead!!!
Lots of Foreshadowing
Did anyone else get the sense that the child taking the Mand’alor creed is Paz Vizsla’s son? I also felt like they might have been foreshadowing Grogu becoming a Mand’alor when the Armorer is making a child’s helmet.
We also catch our first glimpse of live-action Purrgils. I believe this also, perhaps, foreshadows Thrawn’s return in the Ahsoka series. I love all the other little easter eggs littered throughout Navarro. The kowakian monkey-lizards, the Kitchen droid, and the Anzellans are some of my favorite ones.
There are two antagonists emerging in this season. Pirate King Gorian Shard (whose voice is very familiar) will be the obvious main antagonist. By the way, I got a little excited when Greef’s droid referred to pirates in the courtyard. A small part of me was hoping we would see live-action Hondo Onaka.
Bo-Katan will be the other antagonist but I don’t think she will remain that way. There will be some conflict between her and Din Djarin until the rightful owner of the Darksaber is determined. I suspect Bo-Katan will ultimately wield it so that she may become the rightful ruler of Mand’alor. Din Djarin will do something to gain her respect.
The Handling of Cara Dune
Let’s address the elephant in the room; Cara Dune. This has been a popular topic on social media since the Deadline article was published. I appreciate the respectful handling of Cara Dune in this episode. They could have been petty and killed her off. Instead, she’s out there doing her thing in the fight against the Empire, and I like that. It leaves it open for her return should the two sides find a way to reconcile, which is probably a pipe dream but one can hope.
There is one more foreshadowing suspicion I have. During the brief conversation regarding “Marshal Dune”, Greef emphasizes that he “needs a marshal”. We know Cara Dune won’t be back anytime soon so where else have we seen a marshal? Could this be foreshadowing the return of Cobb Vanth??
