Kelnacca - The Acolyte Episode 7

Title: Choice
Directed by: Kogonada

This is the penultimate episode of the first season. We finally get the other flashback episode with the title I predicted we’d get, although this episode is more from the Jedi’s perspective instead of Mae’s.

This was a solid episode that explains most things we saw in the third episode. There are still a few things left unanswered and a couple of new questions. Overall a solid performance by everyone. Only one more left.

What We Learned

One of the nitpicks from the third episode is the idea that Mae started a fire but stone can’t burn. In this episode, we discover that it was the oil in the lamp that caused the fire to spread into the electrical system. The electrical fire caused a chain reaction thus causing mass destruction within the fortress. It doesn’t take long for an electrical fire to fully engulf a home (or structure).

The term “nightsisters” is finally used. We don’t officially know if these witches were a coven of nightsisters but that is what the Jedi believe. Perhaps this is also why the Jedi are concerned about the twins’ birth after running the blood tests. More on that later.

We also see why Sol is riddled with guilt. Not only is he responsible for killing Mother Aniseya (for a misunderstanding) but he also chose Osha over Mae. His attachment to Osha nearly caused the death of Mae, although, at the time, he thought he had just killed her. If Sol faces the Council, could he be exiled from the Jedi Order?

Questions that Remain

Speaking of Mae, we still don’t know how she survived the fall. Perhaps her anger (fueled by Mother Koril) and her connection with the Force aided in her survival. After all, that is how Darth Maul survived his duel with Obi-Wan in The Phantom Menace.

I’m also curious about what happened to the witches controlling Kelnacca’s mind. When Master Indara severs the connection did she cause the death of all those witches? I feel like that’s an awfully dark choice for Indara to make. Even if the witches hadn’t died but fell unconscious after the connection was severed, the fire would have still killed them. In either case, Master Indara’s actions resulted in the death of 8 witches.

Finally, the creation of the twins. We learn that the twins were not created the same way as Anakin, which most of us knew. Therefore their existence does not cheapen Anakin’s purpose. It sounds like, as part of their artificial creation, the twins were once a single consciousness split into two? That seems sketchy. I wonder if we are going to learn more about this. It definitely falls within the purview of the Nightsisters, which is why the Jedi are spooked.
