March is comedy month. Chosen simply because my birthday is in March and comedy is my favorite genre. Almost half of my Plex library is comedy movies. I guess I love to laugh. For each themed month, I try to choose movies with a common element. Last year it was an ode to Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. This year my selection of movies is all from the ’90s:
- Down Periscope (1996)
- Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
- Heart and Souls (1993)
- The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
- Multiplicity (1996)
“You know, for Kids!”
I’m curious how many folks have seen all of these movies. In my opinion, they are all underappreciated. Down Periscope is another movie that I have seen enough times I can quote it. In fact, it’s one of those movies I find myself quoting in conversations. This is, also, Patton Oswalt’s film debut.
Multiplicity is another movie I randomly quote … mostly that “She touched my pepe, Steve”. If you read that using the voice, you are awesome. Grosse Pointe Blank is a great comedy with John Cusack, Dan Aykroyd, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Piven. Cusack is a contract killer that returns to his hometown and finds something he lost 10 years ago. Heart and Souls is an old Robert Downey Jr movie that’s funny and will hit you “in the feels”.
If you have not seen The Hudsucker Proxy, “They dock ya!”. Tim Robbins and Jennifer Jason Leigh give amazing performances with some Bruce Campbell thrown in there. It is a really fun movie and I highly recommend it.
Let me know if you’ve seen any of them.
Bonus and Special Event Movies
There are two special event movies. “The Day of the Dude” is on the 6th and that’s when I watch The Big Lebowski. March 10th is Mario Day (Mar10) and I watch the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie. When that movie first came out, it was not well received. It has since become a bit of a cult classic.
There was, kind of, a bonus movie. I found the movie 9 to 5 on HBO Max. It’s a movie from 1980 that I’ve been trying to go back and watch for a while. It features Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman, and Dolly Parton in her theatrical film debut. Eventually I will pick it up and add it to my collection. If you haven’t seen it, you should check it out.
“The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle.”
– Stanley Kubrick
