The original intention was to go with a Mel Gibson comedy theme but then I realized that Richard Donner also directed all the movies I picked. If you are a movie aficionado like I am, you may have already guessed the films on this list this month. As I’ve said before, comedies are my favorite genre of film so picking just a handful is always difficult to do. However, I’m very satisfied with this month’s selections.
Tag: Comedy
March is comedy month. Chosen simply because my birthday is in March and comedy is my favorite genre. Almost half of my Plex library is comedy movies. I guess I love to laugh. For each themed month, I try to choose movies with a common element. Last year it was an ode to Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. This year my selection of movies is all from the ’90s:
- Down Periscope (1996)
- Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
- Heart and Souls (1993)
- The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
- Multiplicity (1996)
“You know, for Kids!”
I’m curious how many folks have seen all of these movies. In my opinion, they are all underappreciated. Down Periscope is another movie that I have seen enough times I can quote it. In fact, it’s one of those movies I find myself quoting in conversations. This is, also, Patton Oswalt’s film debut.
The Monthly Movie Theme (MMT) for March is Comedy. March is the month in which I celebrate my birthday and I felt Comedy is probably my favorite genre. The comedy movies I picked for 2022 are:
- Grumpy Old Men
- Grumpier Old Men
- The Odd Couple
- The Odd Couple II
- Out To Sea
A Theme Within a Theme
If you are familiar with these films you probably notice a theme within these selections. I was originally intending to only watch the first two movies on the list and then add other selections later. As I said in another post, they are two of my favorite comedy movies. After watching them I decided to make it an “Ode to Lemmon and Matthau” month.
Watching those movies is very nostalgic for me. They still make me laugh. My college roommate and I loved these movies and watching them really makes me think of those days. Even to this day he and I still frequently refer to each other as “Putz” and “Moron”.
Special Event Movie(s)
Some month have, what I call, special event movies. These movies often correspond to some nerdy holiday and I try to watch those movies on, or around, those days.
March has two: The Day of the Dude and Mario Day. The Day of the Dude is on March 6th and I watch The Big Lebowski. Mario day is March 10th (because Mar 10, looks like MarIO … get it?). Anyway. I will put on the Super Mario Brothers movie. I know that movie isn’t the greatest film ever made. It’s kind of become a bit of a cult classic despite it’s reputation.
My [Rating: 3]
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Jason Bateman
Synopsis: Sandy Patterson (Bateman) is great at his job, married, two kids, one on the way. He leads a perfect life. His world is turned upside down when his identity is stolen from someone (McCarthy) on the other side of the country. If he wants to keep his job and get his life back, he will need to bring the thief in himself. Unfortunately he’s not the only one that’s out to get her.
Biggs’ Review: Unfortunately this was one of those movies where most of the funny scenes were shown in the trailer. Perhaps my expectations were higher, but I was expecting to laugh more and the movie did get to the point where it felt like it was running a little long. When you have comedic talents such as Melissa McCarthy, Jason Bateman, John Cho and Jon Favreau in a movie together, you expect to laugh from one minute to the next, however Favreau and Cho have such little screen time it seems like its hardly worth mentioning their names in the credits.
Melissa McCarthy is hilarious though and her comedy alone does make it worth checking this movie out but I’d rent it. I’m pretty certain that she had to have ad-libbed some of of her lines. Jason Bateman was funny in his passive aggressive way, which is what I enjoy about his acting.
