The MMO Times: Trademarks Foreshadow

Issue 87: Salutations, Pwners! You can probably guess that there is an article in this issue which alludes to some announcement coming from Blizzard. I would be curious what everyone’s thoughts are regarding that article. Next week is Gamescom so we could potentially hear what it all means, plus I’m sure there will be other big announcements from other gaming companies as well. Remember this happened just before the unveiling of the latest WoW expansion when Blizzard trademarked “Mists of Pandaria”. [UPDATE: This may also be a hoax.]

So, beyond Blizzard related articles you can also read more about the next content patch for SWTOR, a new FFXIV video, and other interesting news. This post is a little early this week and with Gamescom next week, I’ll probably be posting the next issue kind of late. Which means, depending on how much newsworthy content is unveiled, the next issue could be lengthy. I’m kind of hoping for a bunch of exciting news because lately its felt like the “usual rigmarole”.

First Glimpses of Game Update 2.4

Posted 8.10.13 – WizardWorld, which is Chicago’s ComicCon, was this past weekend and the devs at Bioware wanted to give SWTOR fans a glimpse of whats coming in the next content update, 2.4. The image associated with this post has me a little excited because it looks like Dread Masters (think General Grievious) might be making an appearance in TOR; and there looks to be a new mount! I really have to get back into playing this game!

Blizzard Trademarks “The Dark Below” (Hoax?)

Posted 8.13.13 – The last time Blizzard bought a trademark it was for “Mists of Pandaria” so obviously everyone is thinking that this may be the name of a new expansion. However its awfully early for Blizzard to trademark the name for the next WoW expansion so its probably related to Diablo III. Blizzard will be at Gamescom next week and did tease about its press conference happening on the 21st. Personally I think its going to be D3, that name doesn’t seem to fit WoW [Turns out this is probably a hoax].

Fanmade StarCraft MMO Kickstarter Funding

Posted 8.13.13 – After Blizzard put the kibosh on a StarCraft MMO, a movement for developing a fanmade MMO version of the game began. Now, even with Blizzard’s permission, a kickstarter campaign has begun to raise $80,000 in funding for StarCraft Universe to make it Free-2-Play. I’m not a big StarCraft player, in fact I haven’t even tried StarCraft II, so this isn’t too exciting for me, but there might be a few out there holding back their geek-asm.

Bad News: Civ Online Releasing in Korea Only

Posted 8.13.13 – In the last issue I found an article about Civilization Online, the first Civilization MMO. Unfortunately it appears that it will only be releasing in Korea and there are “no plans” for any western release. I’m sure this is a huge bummer for any Civ fan out there excited for a potential MMO (if its done right). You never know though, things could change.

 New FFXIV Trailer Shows Epic Footage

Posted 8.13.13 – A new trailer was released for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. As the author of the post states, whether you’re a fan or not, you’re going to want to watch this video. There a couple of caveats. The video is 13 minutes long, and its in Japanese. It’s still worth checking out as the video will show you character creations, crafting, and more. Make some time and check out the video.

The Diable III Expansion Announced

Posted 8.14.13 – Well, I guess the trademarking of “The Dark Below” now seems to be the potential name of the WoW expansion (or a hoax) as “Reaper of Souls” was discovered to be linked to Diablo III (see official website link below). Personally I think “The Dark Below” is kind of a weak Warcraft title but I guess if its the best description of the expansion then the title makes sense. I would expect to see the official announcement at Gamescom next week.
