Book Review: A Clash of Kings

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2)A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin

This is the second book in the Song of Fire and Ice series. I think the second was just as good as the first and I’d say it had a completely different tone. Yes, death is still the theme; you never know who will be the next to die. This book also gets a little darker in many facets. Darker will come in the form of “creepy” and in the form of destruction.

When I told friends and co-workers that I was going to start reading these books they all told me the same thing – “Don’t get too attached to characters in the book” because Martin has no qualms about killing off a character if it suits the story and the situation. I think, because of that advice, I read these books with a different approach. I’m always thinking, is this the last chapter I will read of this character.

Book Review: A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

My [rating: 4]
(Click here to read the review on Goodreads.)

I really enjoyed this book by the end. I have to admit that it’s a little slow to start. I believe it was intended to be that way as a means to set up its rich web of characters and their relationships. I read this book without having seen any of the HBO series as I didn’t want the show to influence how I visualize the world and the characters.

It’s a long read, especially when there is a lot of character and plot development but I would recommend you stick to it. By the end you will be ready to read the next book. The chapter structure is different, which means I had no idea when I was reading the final chapter (unless you cheat and look ahead), but I really liked how it ended. If you will allow me to be trite (as well as an intentional pun), the end was “hot!”

The MMO Times: The 40th Issue!

Issue 40

It’s Comic-Con week this week and man I wish I was there. William Shatner, Felicia Day, the entire Firefly cast (including Joss Wheadon) are just a couple of the big reasons I wish I were there! It’s also been a slow week in gaming this week not only because of Comic-Con but also because SWTOR patch 1.3 and The Secret World are now in full swing. So I know we are all busy doing what we all do best, but perhaps you will find some of the following articles and posts interesting.

In this 40th issue of the MMO Times there is more information regarding the Game of Thrones MMO, a new Ultima MMO from EA, some more reviews for The Secret World and the announcement of some new incentive programs from Bioware. Read on and enjoy!

The MMO Times: Freedom Edition

Issue 39

Greetings Gamers! I hope everyone had a happy, and safe, Fourth of July. I don’t know what its like in your neck of the woods but around here it has been sweltering. A perfect reason to stay in doors and play some MMOs.

It has been an exciting week as Funcom’s latest project, The Secret World, went live on the 3rd. More news about Bigpoint’s new Game of Thrones project, as well as some reviews about the newest SWTOR content patch. There is some good stuff to check out this week so enjoy!

The MMO Times: Mechs and Dragons and Lightsabers, OH MY!!!

Issue 28

Greetings Fellow Gamers! I am trying to remain on top of all the latest MMO news that I believe most of you will find interesting. The GDC was going on this week so there have been quite a few of announcements. This issue has some new information about MechWarrior Online, the latest SWTOR patch trailer as well as more news on upcoming patches and updates for other popular games. There are also details about the Diablo III release date, Guild Wars 2 pre-order information and more.

I may have another issue next week as Blizzard has indicated that a wealth of expansion information will be unveiled by the media sometime next week. I would expect that the next issue of MMO Times will be dominated by World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria news.

The MMO Times: Let’s Make Everything An MMO!

A Total Recall MMO in Production (Unfortunately)

There are just some days when you read something like this and all you can do is /facepalm. Why in the world of Azeroth would someone want to make an MMO based on Total Recall?!? Its not like that was the best movie ever made, its just popular because of “tri-boob chick” (WARNING: NSFW!!!). Anyway, I found this post on a website called Gamasutra that Sony Pictures is behind this atrocity.

Game of Thrones MMO Announced

I haven’t read this series yet, but its on my ToDo list. I’m not surprised, based on the success of the novels and the TV mini-series, that the possibility of an MMO would emerge. Bigpoint has announced that they are working on making an GoT MMO.

STO Will Be F2P 01-17-2012

Finally something to talk about that doesn’t refer to a new MMO. A few months ago I found an announcement that Cryptic would be making Star Trek Online Free-2-Play. I found an article from a website called Ology that gives the date STO will be F2P, January 17, 2012. I think I saw somewhere that Tom’s Hardware also had the announcement.
