I know I’ve been silent for a while. April and May were extremely busy with birthdays, spring break, and the end of the school year. However, this announcement seems like a great way to return to my blog. Spaceballs 2 Is Official! This was becoming one of those things that’s teased for years but this time, it’s real …
Based on my research, Mel Brooks is still heavily involved in the making of the film, even at a ripe 98 years old. I’ve also read that Bill Pullman will be back and so will Rick Moranis. We haven’t seen Rick Moranis since he retired from acting back in the 90s after his wife died.
Nothing has been said about who will play Barf and that is quite a conundrum since John Candy is irreplaceable. Josh Gad is also heavily involved with the production of the film and he is listed as an actor. I can’t see them recasting Barf so my guess is that Gad will play a relative, probably an offspring of Barf.

Lots of Parody Material
As the announcement trailer alludes to, there is plenty of material to parody. Again, based on some of my research, it sounds like they are going to poke fun at Disney quite a bit. Sequel and Disney Star Wars fans, like myself, will need to keep in mind that this is a parody and we need to be able to laugh at ourselves.
It will be interesting to see how the younger generation reacts to a film like Spaceballs. Or, maybe the reverse. Perhaps the older generation (shout out to GenX) will be the ones with a reaction to a modern Spaceballs movie.
It’s not slated to release until 2027 but I’ll keep my eyes and ears open as more details come out. By 2027 Mel Brooks will be 100 years old. I hope he sticks around to see the film’s theatrical release.
May the Schwartz Be With You!
