Using Your FitBit to Get Fit

my-fitbitOne of the most common things I hear from people who are trying to exercise more by using a fitness device, such as a FitBit, is that they always forget to wear it, charge it, etc. Granted some of the reasons I’ve heard are legitimate (i.e. battery life is terrible – most common reason with FitBit Zip), but forgetting to wear it is something that can be fixed. My secret was forcing myself to be OCD about checking for it in my pocket.

I don’t mean a casual pick-it-up-with-my-wallet-and-watch kind of OCD. I’m talking Melvin Udall (As Good As It Gets) tap-my-pockets-every-hour kind of OCD. I will seriously check for my FitBit more often then I will check for my wallet. I’m telling you, it sounds crazy, but it works. I have had the same FitBit since January 2013 and it’s on my person 98% of the time. If I’m not wearing it, then I’m not moving!

Once I have successfully developed an OCD for carrying it, then I develop and OCD for reaching that daily goal. I think the trick to setting that goal is don’t make it an easy goal. The average person walks about 5,000 steps a day. Challenge yourself by trying to double that (which is why I think 10,000 is the default step goal with new FitBits). If you are easily within 90% of your step goal on a regular basis, then add another 1,000 steps. When you see that you need more steps, then you start inventing ways to get additional steps. It might mean parking farther away or taking the stairs everyday (if its feasible) or using that treadmill or stationary bike more often.

Two final (and fairly obvious) things to note:

  1. Wearing a fitness device probably won’t be the only thing that you have to do to get into better shape. It’s just one tool in an arsenal (i.e. diet, regular exercise, etc).
  2. FitBit isn’t the only fitness device you can choose from, it’s just the one I prefer and recommend.

So there you have it. If you are the kind of person that has an addictive personality, embrace that attribute and use it to your advantage, that’s essentially what I did. I’ve been down 55 pounds for going on two years now.

Book Review: Odd Thomas

Odd ThomasOdd Thomas by Dean Koontz

My rating: [rating=5]
(Click here to see this review on Goodreads)

Dean Koontz proves once again why he is one of my favorite authors. I probably enjoyed this book about as much as I enjoyed The Door to December (which is my favorite Koontz novel). I think I read this book fairly quickly because I was hooked fairly quickly. In fact he pretty much hooks you right at the beginning when you learn about Odd Thomas’ gift.

I have to admit, this was the first time I was feeling a little choked up at the end of a Dean Koontz novel. It was an ending I wasn’t expecting. I think [possible spoiler alert, here] my heart bottomed out just as Odd’s did when reality set in. I think Koontz handled the character relationships extremely well, hence my feeling of deep sorrow at the end.

I understand now why so many people fell in love with Odd Thomas and I’m looking forward to reading the other books. If you are a Koontz fan, then you need to read this book (if you haven’t already).

Too Much Star Wars?

master-lukeI know that is a surprising title coming from me, but hopefully that is what grabbed your attention. Let’s recap. There are 6 movies now. Episode VII is pretty much wrapped up. VIII and IX are in the works. The Rogue One movie cast has been announced. We have Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Droid Tales animated series. There are rumors, still circulating, of Boba Fett and Han Solo spin off movies. Then, of course, there are the plethora of video games. We have been inundated with Star Wars since Disney took over, which is pretty much what Disney does. We know that it won’t end as long as people keep tweeting about it, posting on Facebook about it and buying memorabilia (guilty!) So is it too much Star Wars?

Right now any Trekkie reading this is vehemently screaming “YES” (complete with Daniel Bryan arm gesture). In fact there are probably quite a few Star Wars “fans” that also agree probably since The Phantom Menace. Personally, I’m not there yet. I am very excited for The Force Awakens. I’m actually even a little excited for Rogue One (especially since the great Alan Tudyk will be in it). I’m on the fence about the whole Boba Fett/Han Solo spin-offs but we’ll see how that plays out.

Then there is the Star Wars parks that Disney also announced because, again, that’s what Disney does, build parks. Therein lies the real conundrum. The rational side of me is thinking, a Star Wars theme park probably isn’t necessary. The idea is cool as hell, but economically it seems like a bad business venture. Of course there is every ounce of my inner child screaming “I wanna go! I wanna go!” so if the park(s) is/are actually built, and it doesn’t cost a small fortune, I definitely hope to arrange at least one visit, you know, for the kids!

So for now I guess I’m not feeling all that overwhelmed. Actually I’m rather enjoying all the love that Star Wars is getting right now. For years we have endured so many Star Trek movies and television series, while Star Wars sat silently in the background, that its about time the best science-fiction drama gets some deserved time in the lime light. So go watch tribble mating rituals on your holodecks while getting wasted on Romulan ale if you don’t like it! 🙂

P.S. By the way, Star Wars Rebels … really good! You should watch it!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The MMO Times: Back to School

Rogue One Cast Issue 127: Greetings again, gamers!! I hope everyone had a lovely summer as, by now, kids are returning to school which means the malls and trade chat are safe once again during the day. The news of the impending fall season isn’t all bad as that also means football season is upon us! I hope I have some exiting things for you to read about in this issue, as I know its going to be difficult to top the past two issues with all the Legion goodies and Gamescom news. Although there were some pretty sexy geek announcements at Disney’s D23 Expo (such as the announcement of the Rogue One movie cast as seen in the image above).

In any event, I have some things to talk about other than the new WoW expansion (though there are one or two headlines in here about Legion and/or WoW). Actually there are a couple of titles that haven’t been in the news much lately such as The Secret World, Elder Scrolls Online, ArcheAge, to name a few. I had to include the headline about the sweet new PS4 coming out this fall (once you see the article, you will know why). There is more BlizzCon news to read about, which is probably the next big gamer conference we are all excited to see. Beyond more Legion news, I hope we hear more about Overwatch (such as when the beta’s start). Enjoy. KCGO.

Book Review: Four

Four: A Divergent Collection (Divergent, #0.1-0.4)Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth

My rating: [rating=4]
(Click here to read this review on Goodreads)

I really enjoyed the different perspective and the little bit of backstory about Four. You learn a little bit about why he left Abnegation, why he and Eric don’t get along, and what is going through his mind during the time he is Tris’ initiation instructor. Obviously that means this book does have portions from Divergent so you should at least read Divergent before reading this book.

There are some interesting plot points that, had Four decided differently, would have completely changed how the war would have begun. It may have even altered the fates of some of the transfers in Tris’ unit.

I probably haven’t read the other books since Divergent was in theaters so some of the conversations between Tris and Four are a little fuzzy. I feel like some of the things they say to each other were different between the two books but I could be mistaken. Honestly it doesn’t really matter, it was a fun read regardless.

Thomas, Thomas, Thomas!

brady-sketchYou know Tom Brady’s last name is apt because he’s the cherished primadonna of the Patriots just as Marsha Brady was to Tom and Carol. The man is guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt that he was, at least, knowledgeable of the under-inflated footballs. He won’t admit to it because he’s Tom Brady, the man that can do nothing wrong. The only other people completely diluted other than himself are the New England fans, while the rest of us, living in the real world, know the man is guilty. Despite his royal status the NFL did uphold the four game suspension, which surprised the heck out of me, I thought for sure they would cave and reduce it to two games. Of course that could all still change.

Now, it seems, Brady has succeeded yet again, in deflating balls in the NFL. Originally the NFL said he would not be playing in the pre-season opener but that was overturned rather quickly. I did not watch the game but I heard he did terrible, probably because he had a hard time gripping a properly inflated ball. Meanwhile the deflated balls are the testicles of the NFL that decided to let him play after all. This will be the first step toward the NFL backing down, yet again, to the big, scary Patriots and they will get away with, yet another, cheating scandal.

Why are the Patriots such a pampered team?? At least the Cowboys have an excuse! Jerry Jones has more money than God so he can spoil that team, and the fans, with all kinds of high-tech stadiums and equipment; but at least he hasn’t cheated his way to a Super Bowl championship. I have no problem with the Red Sox (in fact they are probably my favorite AL team) and I don’t have a problem with the Bruins, but why does Boston have to claim the Patriots as their NFL team?? If you don’t want to be a Giants fan or [for whatever reason] a Jets fan, then switch allegiances to that other footie sport.

Tom Brady should just retire already, he’s nothing but a sniveling, talent-less cheater!

minion_keboard_smI could get so much more accomplished if I only had minions!
