A Geek's Cogitations, Conjectures and other Cortical Experiences

Happy 4th of July, America!

Its been a tumultuous time for all of us here in the United States of America. I wish that all political sides could get along better because its difficult watching everyone belittle and berate each other because of our opposing views. If I had to find a silver lining among our bickering I would say that we do have a common goal in mind when we do debate so vehemently, we all want a better America. There is no denying that the passion we hold for our beliefs is so we can create a better country for ourselves, our children and all future generations.

I ask that on this day we put aside the healthcare discussions, the political propaganda and the mudslinging and celebrate why we have the freedom and the right to be able to do it. Say the Pledge of Allegiance (as its meant to be said), sing the National Anthem, attend a fireworks ceremony and celebrate, peacefully, the great country we live in.

Happy Independence Day America!
And God Bless!

We’re All Geeks – We Should Embrace It

I remember back in high school (which has been just over 10 years ago) it was common for me to be labeled as a geek or nerd. It’s funny how the times have changed. I don’t know if kids today are still being labeled as geeks but what is funny is that really, we’re all geeks.

← Granted we all don’t look like this guy, but that’s because this is the stereotype that use to represent a geek. I personally believe that it is no longer derogatory to be a geek and I think you will find there are many that agree. I’m sure you have even heard of a few popular geeks.

Ending the Dry Spell, Hopefully

Greetings all! It has been a while since I have posted anything on my blog. Life, as we all know, sometimes gets a little crazy. There was a curve ball or two thrown my way and, honestly, the news lately has just been atrocious. Assaults on various freedoms, bickering among party members, and this whole thing with Iran scares the shit out of me. But I’m not here to talk politics, I hate blogging about politics. I hate election years.

At any rate, I hope to be back in the saddle again immediately. I do like to blog and while I know not many people read my blogs, sometimes it can be extremely motivating when I find out people are reading. In fact, just before the “fit hit the shan” I found out that I had inspired a friend of mine to start his own blog. So I encourage you to visit Captain Light’s blog. I added it as a Suggested Link. He like to talk about movies, wrestling and various other topics. I’m extremely excited that I have motivated someone else to write more. Writing is great exercise for the brain, it helps you organize your thoughts and enhance your grammar and vocabulary.

All right, enough babble; time to start generating new post ideas.

Cheers!

Blogging Has Been Humbling

This website is the only place I really blog about anything. I was thrilled when I actually found out that someone other then my friends had read something I wrote (see Don’t Think I’m A Clone Now). I thought that perhaps if total strangers found that post interesting that maybe I would be able to write something else interesting as well.

I should qualify myself by saying that I am not a professional writer by any means. I’m just a gamer, computer geek and a programmer. I only post blogs because I like the mental exercise of writing. I feel like its a workout for my brain, much like doing sit-ups or push-ups. I became defensive from some of the comments that people left from my last post, but instead of getting upset, I turned their constructive comments into a lesson in writing.

My last post I wrote quickly and on a whim. It was something rattling around in my brain that I decided to whip out in 20 minutes and post it. What I learned was that I need to spend more time thinking about what message I am trying to convey to the reader. If I leave out key components that link what I’m trying to say to my main point then I think readers will lose the meaning of the post. It isn’t anything the reader is doing wrong nor is it a reflection on their comprehension skills; it’s my fault, as the author, for not making the message clear.

I really appreciate the fact that friends and complete strangers read the things that I post and I hope to improve my composition skills in future blogs. I encourage people to continue to leave their thoughts and comments so that I may continue to learn from their feedback.

Thanks and Cheers!

My Bewilderment Leaves Me Speechless

I’m a gamer, most of you already know that. I get just as excited hearing about games that I don’t or won’t play as I do about the games that I have been playing for years. As much as I can’t wait to read the latest headline about the next MMO, there does come a point where I want so smack some people for their stupid ideas.

I mean, not every idea for an MMO is inane but some are down right ridiculous. I chuckled when I heard about Lego Universe and I even got into the beta for it. It was cute, it brought back very fond childhood memories but definitely not something I would play long term. The challenge for many software companies was to dethrone the king, World of Warcraft. I think, however, that companies are taking the MMO thing a little to far. It has become an obnoxious craze.

Here is some words of advice to those aspiring game manufacturers: NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE AN MMO!!!!!!!!!

When I heard about Transformers Universe I wasn’t too surprised but I did roll my eyes a bit. Then, today, two unveilings had me clawing my head and muttering like an escaped mental patient: Pottermore, a Harry Potter MMO, and Family Guy Online. Now I do like Harry Potter and I love Family Guy but either one of those as an MMO is absolutely absurd! Will somebody please explain to me why someone thought it was a good idea to make an MMO based off of these two pieces of pop culture. It can’t be because they think it will generate ungodly revenue because not everything made into an MMO is a good idea.

Pardon me while I quote Garfield (the next likely candidate to be made into am MMO) but these people need to be dragged into the street and shot!
