The MMO Times: Here Come the Browncoats!

mmotimesheaderIssue 60: Greetings! Have you been diligent with your gaming resolutions? Are you excited for a new year of new titles, new content and expansions? The news for some of those titles and expansions are starting to roll in and some of the news is pretty exciting depending on your taste in MMOs.

This issue has some more information about Marvel Heroes, TERA and Age of Wushu. There are also some new titles to read about including Cryptic’s new title, Neverwinter and a some news for those that are big fans of Firefly.

SWTOR: Feeling Conflicted

old_republic_iconDespite my previous ranting about the half-assed free-2-play model Bioware implemented, I still often find myself wanting to play SWTOR. Usually that ends the moment I log in and immediately start to feel so constricted that I lose the motivation to play. When I see screenshots, news articles and Larry Everett’s blog posts I start to feel the urge to play again. Larry Everett’s geek enthusiasm is often quite contagious.

I think another point that makes logging into SWTOR difficult is that so many of my friends that use to play are so annoyed and upset about the bad implementation of the free-2-play model that I’m the only one that would play. A majority of the reason I play any MMO is to hang with my friends. Logging in to an empty friends list or guild just wipes out any desire to play.

I’ve thought about just starting a new toon (since I am a preferred member, as of the patch 1.6 I should have additional slots). Perhaps if I start a new toon and level up then I can better acclimate to the restrictions. Granted that still doesn’t resolve the issue of the lack of friends also playing the game.

The MMO Times: All About the Pandas!

mmotimesheaderIssue 59: Happy New Year Gamers! Welcome to 2013! I hope all of you had a safe and splendid Christmas and New Years. I’m sure many of you probably killed off a few brain cells and hopefully you recovered well and with no guilt.

There hasn’t been a lot happening recently, this issue mostly consists of Mists of Pandaria patch 5.2 updates. There are a couple of non-WoW updates here such as Marvel Heroes but I think the Christmas and New Years holidays probably attributed to a lack of interesting news. WoW fans can rest assured though that there will be a Blizzcon 2013 and talks and rumors are already starting. Read on and game on!

Happy New Year!

“Should Old Acquaintance Be Forgot, and Never Thought Upon!”

Well, I seem to be having a string of bad luck with the years ending badly. 2010 and 2011 ended on extremely depressing notes and 2012 decided to end while I was still battling a tremendous head cold. The cold, unfortunately, had me asleep before 11 so I did not participate in any countdown festivities. I hope Ryan Seacrest made Dick Clark proud.

Reflecting back, 2012 wasn’t a bad year, obviously it had its peaks and valleys. I think, overall, the peaks outnumbered the valleys. I hope for a great 2013, though it isn’t starting out great as my head cold has mutated into a wretched cough.

I hope everyone reading this had a wonderful New Years celebration and I wish you and your families an extraordinary and prosperous 2013. I hope you are recovering from your hangovers well and lets look forward to some NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl in a couple weeks.

/Cheers!

The MMO Times: HoHoHo, Merry Christmas!

mmotimesheaderIssue 58: Greetings Gamers! This will be the last pre-apocalyptic and pre-Christmas issue so I hope you enjoy the headlines because they could be your last (or the last for this year). So if you’re waiting on a queue, the servers are down for maintenance or you are taking a break from making Armageddon plans check out what we have this week.

We have some new content coming to The Secret World and SWTOR. Some more information on upcoming titles such as Age of Wushu and Marvel Heroes. There is also some interesting news about an old MMO coming back online (which I don’t think has ever happened before). Perhaps an encouraging sign for other MMOs that we have lost over the past couple of years. There is this and more so read on and game on, friends!

Book Review: Keres’ Eyes

Keres' EyesKeres’ Eyes by Michael Curtis

My [rating: 4]

I won this book as part of the First Reads program from Goodreads and it was the first book I won from First Reads so I was anxious to get started.

I really enjoyed this book. In fact I found it very difficult to put it down. Michael Curtis does a great job pulling the reader in and quickly identifying with the characters. You are ready to cheer when the villain gets it in the end.

If you’re really into crime dramas, this is a great read.
