I can hardly contain myself. Halloween approaches quickly, too, which means the daystar will soon give way to frigid temperatures (depending on your location). However that also means BlizzCon fast approaches as well as the Overwatch public beta. Are you asking “What Overwatch public beta?” then you might want to read on (although it has been all over social media). On a somber note, if you have ever watched any videos by TotalBiscuit, he is in need of your thoughts and prayers, now more than ever (more on that below).

So you already know there is something about an Overwatch beta, but there are some new things coming for WoW (more pre-Legion patches) as well as a new pet apparently added over a month ago but only recently discovered, details on a new FFXIV patch, exciting news for SWTOR players (beyond the new trailer) and more! Remember this classic moment (from the movie Rookie of the Year)?

Coincidentally that scene was a game between the Cubs and Mets for the NLCS and that was that late John Candy, a loyal Cubs fan, playing the role of the Cubs commentator. I’ve been sitting here trying to work and trying not to think about the Cubs just four wins away from a World Series (which has never happened in my lifetime). I haven’t been very successful. I blame Twitter.

lgo_mlb_chicago_cubsThe Mets are 0-7 against the Cubs during the regular season, but this is the post-season and your regular season record doesn’t matter anymore (remember the Cardinals had won over 100 games and had the best record in all of baseball). It’s going to be a tough contest for both teams (and probably quite lively as the mudslinging has already begun between the fans). The Cubs have earned their spot here from incredible plays and young, focused players. Some of the plays I’ve seen during the NLDS are World Series plays. The Cubs look like a championship team. They have a real shot this year but I’m trying to remain humble.

If they don’t go all the way, even if they are eliminated in the NLCS, I will still be very proud of how well the team played this year. There will be no lamenting or sorrow. They, not only, eliminated the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time, Joe Madden even made good on his promise. The Cubs were, originally, expected to make the playoffs next year but Madden, at a press conference, promised that the team would make the playoffs this year. They have shown all of baseball that the Cubs are real contenders. They are a team that will not let any other team write them off as an “easy win”.

Goat or no goat, Back to the Future prognostications or not, win or lose, this was our year. We have been saying it for as long as I’ve been alive, “this will be the year”, and whether we are world champions or not, I think 2015 was definitely our year.

Soapbox: USB on Mobile Devices is Frivolous

minion_daveI still see articles posted criticizing Apple because they still haven’t added a USB port to their phones or tablets. I don’t understand why there are still people clinging to this pagan belief that mobile devices need to have a USB port. Folks, we are living in a world where our data is stored in the elusive but ultra convenient Cloud. The very concept of a mobile device should be the epitome that embraces Cloud based technology.

I have been using an iPhone since the 3GS and an iPad since version 2 and I have never pined for a USB port to use a thumb drive. Once a tablet has a USB port, it’s no longer a tablet; it’s now a laptop (albeit it thin and lacking peripherals). The fact that Samsung and Microsoft still throws that in Apple’s face is both absurd and ludicrous.

What is easier?

A) insert thumb drive. open folder on thumb drive. copy file to thumb drive. eject thumb drive. plug thumb drive into other device/computer. open folder on thumb drive. Edit file.

or

B) open remote cloud folder. Edit file.

It is far easier and more convenient to use Cloud based storage so you would greatly benefit from learning that methodology. If you prefer that I say it in trite gaming vernacular “learn2Dropbox”

The MMO Times: A Bloody Fortnight!

x-wing.0Issue #134: I intentionally went an extra week between issues. The gaming news has been a little slow and mired by all the political nonsense and cool tech releases of the IRL news. I didn’t want to scrounge for moot headlines just to post something weekly so hopefully I haven’t failed you by waiting just a little longer to bring you interesting news. Blizzard has been especially quiet lately, which means they are trying to hold out until BlizzCon (although I stewie_madwouldn’t be surprised if they let a few tidbits “slip” out).

Meanwhile the Star Wars Battlefront beta has begun for PS4, XBox One and PC. I have been hearing some pretty good feedback about the game (despite what “certain trolls” think *cough*Tommy*cough*). I have it installed on my PC at the moment but I haven’t had an opportunity to log in yet. I’ve heard it’s essentially Star Wars Counterstrike but that’s how it was advertised. If you  have been trying it out I would like to know your thoughts (even if they happen to align with Tommy’s 😉 ) I also read that over nine million people have played the beta setting an EA record!

Speaking of Battlefront, there are a couple of new details about that game in the headlines below; and news about crafting in Star Wars The Old Republic. I had to post something regarding Rocket League because its new car pack is pretty cool (in a 1980’s-cult-classic kind of way). Blizzard has released the schedule for BlizzCon and there is something, finally, about the Overwatch beta, although it’s probably not as much as you hoped. Oh and MOAR PEPE!! KCGO
