My Rating:

This is not going to be a normal movie review. If you came here looking for a standard critique, you came to the wrong place. I haven’t attended a Star Wars movie on opening weekend since The Phantom Menace, so I was very excited for this movie. I walked in ready to enjoy it, and I walked out having enjoyed it as much as I expected I would. This movie is a fun ride, and it will be in my May movie rotation (in fact, this is it’s inaugural year).

I will discuss what I think it means for the Mandoverse and how it may tie into the larger story following the conclusion of Season 3 (as well as other series that preceded it).

Later in the post I will talk about the easter eggs I saw, which will contain some spoilers.

What Do I Need to Know Before Seeing this Movie?

There are a couple of things you should know before seeing this movie. It takes place after Season 3 of The Mandalorian, Season 1 of Ahsoka, and Season 1 of The Book of Boba Fett. I would recommend that you are caught up with all the seasons of The Mandalorian and that you have also seen The Book of Boba Fett, which introduces the Twins (they are critical to the plot of the movie).

The Hutt Twins

I would also suggest that you have seen the Clone Wars movie; which is the animated flim that introduces Ahsoka for the first time as well as Rotta the Hutt.

This movie is essentially Season 4 of The Mandalorian consolidated down into 2 hours. Grogu receives most of the character development, and, surprisingly, so does Rotta. In fact, I was quite surprised (in a good way) by his role in this movie.

The Easter Eggs

There are a lot of character and actor cameos. The obvious ones we’ve already talked about when the trailer dropped. For example, Embo, Rotta, and Zeb; although Zeb wasn’t really a surprise since he appeared in Season 3.

Everyone knows, from the trailer, that Martin Scorsese provides the voice for the Ardennian Hugo Durant (the 4-armed short order cook). Also, Dave Filoni, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Rick Famuyiwa, and Deborah Chow reprise their roles as their respective X-Wing pilots.

By far my favorite easter egg is the dejarik match with the real creatures. I feel like Favreau had a lot of fun with this scene. This is emphasied by recreating the scene from A New Hope when the Mantellian Savrip defeats the Kintan strider thus angering Chewie.

Another charming easter egg is when the Mantellian Savrip bursts through a door and a sign above the door reads “Weathers Apollo” in Aurebesh. This is a tribute to the late Carl Weathers. Weathers played Greef Karga in The Mandalorian Series and Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies.

What Is The Point of the Film?

So what is the point of this movie? That is an excellent question. As I said earlier this movie is basically Season 4. However, I think there is more coming. This is not the last we will see of The Mandalorian and Grogu. The New Republic has to deal with Thrawn’s return from Peridea. This film essentially positions Din Djarin and Grogu to help The New Republic against Thrawn.

The real question is when will we get that epic conflict? I don’t think it will be in the second season of Ahsoka. My theory is that Dave Filoni will develop a film that completes all the Mandoverse storylines.

That being said, I can’t wait to watch the movie again. I really enjoyed it.
