A Geek's Cogitations, Conjectures and other Cortical Experiences

Ode to 23

You know that I don’t eulogize a celebrity unless they truly meant something to me and I’m truly mourning their passing. In this case, it’s a celebrity athlete, which means they aren’t as well-known around the world. The past two weeks have been hard on us GenXers, but the latest death hit me the hardest. I’ve mentioned before how I grew up as a Chicago Cubs fan, and my favorite player was Ryne Sandberg.

Ryno was amazing to watch at 2nd base. He could teach a master class on 2nd base defense. Second base is my favorite infield position, and it’s because of Ryno. Not only did he make it look easy, but he also made it look fun.

He Didn’t Do It For the Money

When you listen to the stories pouring out from his old teammates and coaches, you learn so much more. He was always a professional. He played the way he played because that’s how you’re supposed to play; it was never about the money. If you don’t believe me, read about his 1994 retirement.

He walked away from a $16 million contract extension because he felt like his game was slipping. He did come back in 1996 to play two more years with the Cubs, and his performance was amazing again. Then, he officially retired at the end of the 1997 season.

I got to meet him once, in the 90s. It was the Cubs Convention in Chicago. I got his autograph and a quick photo with him.

Getting Ryne Sandberg’s autograph at the Cubs Convention about 30 years ago

Thank you for all the childhood memories.

Movie Review of Superman (2025)

Superman (2025) poster

Directed by: James Gunn
Starring: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult
Release Date: July 11, 2025
Runtime: 2 hr 9 min
My Rating:

I am going to try to keep this review spoiler-free because it’s still new in the theaters. As such, I’m just going to come right out and say that I enjoyed this movie. I’ve always been a bigger Marvel fan, but in the DC Universe, Superman is my favorite. Perhaps Christopher Reeve is to thank for that. Admittedly, I was a little nervous; DC has been struggling to match Marvel’s success. I think James Gunn has started strong, and I’m excited for the next story.

This is a retelling of Superman, so they change a few things from the versions you’ve seen before. This is an especially important note for us Gen-Xers who grew up watching the Christopher Reeve movies.

WoW: State of the Raid Season 2

In a few weeks, the 11.2 patch will drop for The War Within, heralding the final season of this expansion. Therefore, it’s time for a quick State of the Raid update for Season 2.

The raid team remains a formidable killing machine. We have cleared Heroic Liberation of Undermine twice, thus securing our Ahead of the Curve achievement for all the raiders. We’ve also been running a few alt raids, which have been very fruitful and a nice change of pace. We also decided to complete the Glory of the Raider achievements for both raids in this expansion, which we haven’t done since Legion.

Movie Review of How to Train Your Dragon

Directed by: Dean DeBlois
Starring: Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler
Release Date: June 13, 2025
Runtime: 2h 5m
My Rating:

If you didn’t know, this is the live-action adaptation of the 2010 animated film starring Jay Baruchel and Gerard Butler. I won’t go into the plot of this movie because it’s the same as the animated film. It’s rare to see a live-action adaptation maintain the same plot with very few changes. It’s all thanks to Dean DeBlois, the director of the animated films. He wanted to direct the live-action so nobody else would adapt his work.

With that said, here is my review of How to Train Your Dragon (2025).

Super Hero Month (2025) – Superman (OG-ish)

For Super Hero Month (2025), I revisited my childhood with the original Superman, played by Christopher Reeve. While I am predominantly a Marvel fan, I do appreciate the DC universe. When it comes to DC Comics, Superman is probably my favorite. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and the Superman theme was part of the soundtrack of my childhood. Honestly, anything composed by Sir John Williams is part of my childhood soundtrack.

Fun Fact: Christopher Reeve was trained by David Prowse to get in shape for his role as Superman. David Prowse was the man in the Darth Vader costume; therefore, Superman was trained by Darth Vader.

Here is the Super Hero Month (2025) list.

Trailers: Fantastic Four: First Steps – Final Trailer

Ok, I’m a little behind posting about new MCU trailers. A couple of days ago, the final trailer for Fantastic Four First Steps came out. If, by chance, you haven’t seen it yet, or want to watch it again, here you go:

This trailer is a little more exciting than the previous trailers we’ve seen for this movie. This cast and story are starting to grow on me, but it’s probably going to be one of those movies that I wait to see the audience’s response. I don’t care about the critics.

Just a note in regards to the MCU, this movie is the first film in Phase Six. Phase Six is also the final set of films in the Multiverse Saga.

The movie comes out on July 25th. If you see it, drop a comment about what you thought. I’m interested.
