A Geek's Cogitations, Conjectures and other Cortical Experiences

Another Critical Look at AI

Just over two years ago, I wrote a post about ChatGPT and OpenAI, including some predictions. I’ve decided to follow up on that and take another critical look at AI. Since that time, I have still never used ChatGPT, and I have barely touched any form of AI.

Does that mean you shouldn’t? Not necessarily. While I still believe my prediction came true—that AI is making people lazier—you don’t have to be like them. Use it as a tool to facilitate your work, but don’t use it to do your work. For example, writing an email does not need to be outsourced. If you’re a developer, don’t buy into this “vibe coding” crap. You’ll learn more by doing it yourself. More on that later.

There are a couple of claims that I want to address. The claim that AI has “changed the world” and that if you’re not embracing it, then you’re being left behind.

Mystery Month (2025)

There’s no central theme to the mystery movies this year; they’re all just random selections of films I’ve wanted to watch (or watch again). The best thing about mystery movies is the various ways they can captivate an audience. It can be through action, drama, thriller, or even comedy. I think the selections this month reflect that idea.

I’ve listed the selections for the month below, and I really enjoyed what I picked … with one exception. All of these movies, with four (or more) stars, I would watch again. There are also bonus and special event movies this month.

Movie Review of Fantastic Four First Steps

Fantastic 4 First Steps poster

Directed by: Matt Shakman
Starring: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach
Release Date: July 25, 2025
Runtime: 1 h 45m
My Rating:

It’s been four years since Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben took that fateful trip into space and became Earth’s protectors. Now, Galactus threatens to consume the planet to satiate his life force, and it’s up to The Fantastic Four to stop him.

This is the first film of the Sixth and final phase of the Multiverse Saga. I’d say that this is a solid start to this phase. I had my doubts when the trailer premiered, but after hearing good things and seeing it myself, those doubts are gone. If I’m being honest, I enjoyed Superman more, but as a bigger Marvel fan, I’m giving this movie the same rating.

Action-Adventure Month (2025): Bourne Again

For Action-Adventure Month (2025), I watched all the movies in the Jason Bourne universe. There are 5, only four of which star Matt Damon. I wasn’t sure how to approach this. Part of me thought about doing individual reviews just as I do for the other months. Then again, this is a collection of films and, oftentimes, I do a bulk summation.

I’m going to do a combination of both. There is also the bonus and special event section with some additional entries from the month. Before I do the breakdown, though, I have to note that I enjoyed all of these movies. I need to watch these movies more frequently. They are definitely on the list of movies to watch repeatedly.

Book Review of Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary book cover

Author: Andy Weir
Published: May 4, 2021
Genre: Science Fiction
My Rating:

Ryland Grace wakes up, alone, in a spaceship twelve light years away from Earth. He doesn’t remember how he got there, but he is humanity’s last hope to prevent the extinction of all life on Earth.

It has been a while since I have posted a book review, but I enjoyed this book so much that I had to write something about it. This is the first book written by Andy Weir that I have read. I enjoy his writing style, where he places you in the main character’s head. It isn’t just the wit and charm of the main character I enjoyed, I loved all the science. I’m a bit of a Physics nerd.

Movie Review for Sketch

Sketch movie poster

Directed by: Seth Worley
Starring: Tony Hale, D’Arcy Carden, Bianca Belle
Release Date: August 6, 2025
Runtime: 1h 32m
Film Rating: PG

My Rating:

When a young girl’s sketchbook falls into a strange pond, her drawings come to life-chaotic, real, and on the loose. As the town descends into chaos, her family must reunite and stop the monsters they never meant to unleash.1

But Biggs, how did you see a movie before it’s in the theater and it’s not streaming anywhere? AMC Theaters has a really cool program called “Screen Unseen“. I have a Stubs Premiere membership, but I don’t know if that’s required. It only costs $6 per person, and the only thing you know about the movie is the film’s rating. They will tell you if it’s a horror movie (which are called “Scream Unseen”).
