For Super Hero Month (2025), I revisited my childhood with the original Superman, played by Christopher Reeve. While I am predominantly a Marvel fan, I do appreciate the DC universe. When it comes to DC Comics, Superman is probably my favorite. I grew up in the 80s and 90s, and the Superman theme was part of the soundtrack of my childhood. Honestly, anything composed by Sir John Williams is part of my childhood soundtrack.
Fun Fact: Christopher Reeve was trained by David Prowse to get in shape for his role as Superman. David Prowse was the man in the Darth Vader costume; therefore, Superman was trained by Darth Vader.
Here is the Super Hero Month (2025) list.
Yes, I’m grouping the movies, but you’ll eventually see why.
Superman 1 & 2

Directed by: Richard Donner & Richard Lester
Starring: Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Margo Kidder
My Rating:
Let these two movies be your introduction to Superman if you didn’t grow up in the 80s and 90s. The music is another brilliant score by Sir John Williams. Many other actors have and will portray the Man of Steel, but these movies and Christopher Reeve will always be the best … for nostalgic reasons. There are some hokey aspects about these movies. For instance, spinning the Earth in the opposite direction would not turn back time.
Superman 3 & 4

Directed by: Richard Lester (3) and Sidney J Furie (4)
Starring: Richard Pryor (3), Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman
My Rating:
Now, the lesser-discussed Superman III and IV. The most anyone has ever said about any of these movies was in Office Space. Christopher Reeve’s book said the less said about Superman 4, the better. I like Richard Pryor in Superman 3, but the rest of the movie is too presumptuous, from an IT perspective. Superman 4 is pretty bad. It’s one of those movies that you watch because the entertainment value lies in how bad the movie is. It’s kind of like watching The Room, except The Room was bad on purpose.
Superman Returns

Directed by: Bryan Singer
Starring: Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth
My Rating:
I’m not sure if this movie gets a bad rap or not, but I enjoyed it. If you want to get technical about it, this movie takes place after Superman II. Bryan Singer made this movie pretending Superman III and IV didn’t exist. Kevin Spacey does all right as Lex Luthor, but he’s not the best, probably not even the second best. He’s probably fairly low on the list. Brandon Routh, however, has a few scenes where he bears an eerily similar resemblance to Christopher Reeve.
Bonus & Special Event Movies
There are no Special Event movies in June (yet), but there were a couple of Bonus films. We actually went to the theater a few times in June, which was so much fun. I really enjoy seeing movies in the theater. One of those movies was Thunderbolts*, which, coincidentally, matches the superhero theme. We also saw the live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon. A review for the latter movie is still forthcoming.
We hope to see movies in the theater more frequently this year.

“The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle.”
– Stanley Kubrick
