A new year means let’s review December’s movie selections. There are a few in there that shouldn’t be a big surprise. There are several I always watch every year (and that list keeps growing). Let’s forego the loquacious preamble and just get into the list:
- White Christmas
- Scrooged
- Star Wars Holiday Special
- Santa Claus the Movie
- 8 Bit Christmas
- A Christmas Story Christmas
- A Christmas Story
- Bad Santa
- Holiday Inn
- A Charlie Brown Christmas
- Spirited
Dreaming of a White Christmas
I always begin every Christmas season watching Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. It is easily one of my favorite Christmas movies. Unfortunately, for those of us in Ohio, this is as close to a White Christmas as we got.
Scrooged, 8 Bit Christmas, A Christmas Story, and A Christmas Story Christmas are also required viewings every year. I hope I don’t have to add anymore because that list is getting pretty long.
Santa Claus the Movie is a film from my childhood. I’m sure some would say it’s not a very good film but it brings back fond memories. Nothing says Christmas like raunchy. Bad Santa is just a funny movie but not one to watch with the kids.
Holiday Inn is another great Irving Berlin film and the origin film of the song “White Christmas”. Fun fact, that song won the Oscar for Best Original Song from that movie.
Spirited is yet another retelling of Charles Dickens’s immortal “A Christmas Carol”. This time it’s a musical starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds. It’s not a terrible rendition; there have definitely been worse. I did enjoy watching Ferrell and Reynolds tap dance.
What Christmas movies did you watch?
“The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle.”
– Stanley Kubrick
