Star Wars Month (2023) Wrap-Up

It’s June 1st which means another Star Wars month has ended. I kept things pretty basic this year; I didn’t have much to post about. No new projects were announced nor any new trailers (I was hoping for a new Ahsoka trailer).

Skywalker Saga

This post also stands in for the Monthly Movie wrap-up post I do after each month. May’s theme should be obvious. Every year, during the month of May, is my Star Wars movie marathon. I managed to squeeze in all 11 movies but not on Disney+. My home theater has a pretty decent HD setup and I own all 11 movies either on Blu-ray or 4K.

I also watched the Kenobi series, again. Listening to the soundtracks is also on the list every May. In fact this year I even wrote a couple of posts about the music of Star Wars.

Bonus and Special Event Movies

Towel Day

There is a special event movie in May. On the 25th we celebrate Geek Pride Day. On the 25th I break from the Star Wars marathon to watch Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in honor of Towel Day.

Watching 12 movies in a month, and only during the work week, is pretty tough. Therefore there wasn’t a bonus movie. It really puts into perspective how many movies I can manage and sets a precedent for future movie selections for the other months of the year.

June is all about superheroes.

Star Wars Month 2022 Recap

Star Wars Month Recap

Instead of doing a “Monthly Movie Theme” post I’m going to do a Star Wars Month recap (since watching the movies is part of the celebration). All good things must come to an end and I’m always sad to see May end. Granted I can (and often do) watch the Star Wars movies and series anytime during the year, but I always make it a priority for May. My goals for May were not too lofty, as I mentioned at the beginning of the month.

On the other hand, I’m excited it’s June so we can see the rest of Obi-Wan Kenobi and all it’s awesome content.

The Obligatory Re-Watch

I successfully watched all 11 movies again, with time to spare. That is a lot of movies to watch in just a few weeks, and only on the week days. Every time, after watching the Han Solo movie, I always think how great that movie is and that I don’t watch it enough. It’s such a shame that it’s release was poorly managed.

Sorry Kathleen, I disagree that it’s poor performance is due to bad casting. If someone told you that, then they are probably the ones responsible and trying to protect their job. Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover are amazing in their roles as Han and Lando (respectively). They should be at the top of the list for reprising their roles should they appear in a series (such as the Lando series).

If you STILL haven’t watched Solo: A Star Wars Story, then you’re missing out. You really need to go watch it; it’s so good!

I also nearly finished watching Star Wars Resistance and I probably would have succeeded if I hadn’t seen a tweet from Disney+ UK. They suggested watching a specific set of episodes from The Clone Wars in preparation for the Kenobi series. I spent the remainder of the month trying to re-watch those episodes.

Special Event Movie(s)

There is one exception made during this month. May 25th is not only the anniversary of the release of A New Hope, it’s also Towel Day. The combination of these two days is why the 25th is also called Geek Pride Day. So the special event movie for May 25th is the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy starring Martin Freeman.

Douglas Adam’s “trilogy in 5 books” has been one of my favorite series to read. In fact I am going to add the books to my read again list. I really enjoy the big screen interpretation of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, especially the casting. Mos Def as Ford Prefect is great and the legendary Alan Rickman (RIP) as the voice of Marvin is brilliant and sublime.

Watching this movie during Star Wars month isn’t a complete tangent from the franchise. Warwick Davis (aka Wicket the Ewok) is the man in the Marvin suit.

I hope all of you that may have celebrated with me this month also had a fun and successful Star Wars month. Until next year …

Star Wars Month and the 501st

I’ve made the argument before that May should be Star Wars month. There are numerous days in May that have some kind of Star Wars relevance. Therefore most of the posts this month, if not all of them, will be Star Wars themed. There is one day this month that is a bit of an exception. May 25th is Geek Pride Day because its the anniversary of the first Star Wars movie and Towel Day.

Despite the negativity from the “so-called” fans about the sequel trilogy, I’m excited for Star Wars month. This year is particularly special because it is the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back (most common fan favorite). Today, as it turns out, is the first of the Star Wars themed days in May, the 501st day.

What Is The 501st?

Click to Enlarge ImageThe 501st Legion is a stormtrooper squad, often seen in The Clone Wars, but canonically known as “Vader’s Fist”. Outside the Star Wars Universe, the 501st is a real life organization. Fans all over the globe are apart of this group of people with a passion for Star Wars. Their mission is to help facilitate the love for the franchise through elaborate and, often times, extremely accurate and life-like costumes. In fact the stormtrooper costumes were so accurate several members of the 501st were brought in to be extras in the final two episodes of season one of The Mandalorian. The actors in the show were also impressed with the quality of craftsmanship.

I wish I had the fabrication talent these folks have for making Star Wars costumes.

In addition to all the other celebratory days, the 21st marks the 40th anniversary of the release of The Empire Strikes Back. As is my usual plan, I will be doing the first ever 11 movie re-watch during the month of May. I may also try to finish watching Rebels and Star Wars Resistance. If I finish all of that in a timely manner, I will be re-watching the first season of The Mandalorian.

It has been a challenging and tumultuous start to this year, so I’m looking forward to making this May fun and exciting. I’m going to try hard to show my Star Wars pride!

How will you spend your Star Wars month?
