In my effort to expand the content of this blog, we have a new trailer that launched today. It is the reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise with a new cast, which, hopefully, will render better results than that disaster back in 2015. So without further ado here is the new Fantastic Four First Steps teaser trailer.
I’ve always been a bigger fan of Marvel than DC but the teaser trailer for James Gunn’s new Superman movie had me feeling much more excited. I don’t think this trailer is bad but there are a few things here to digest, both seen and unseen. The Silver Surfer will be in this movie but it won’t be Norrin Radd. Based on the cast listed on the IMDB page, it will be Shalla-Bal instead (played by Julia Garner).
If you’re unfamiliar with the comics, Shalla-Bal is Norrin Radd’s lover/wife. He promises to be the herald for Galactus to spare his planet and thus Shalla-Bal. It seems, in the MCU, they are flipping the script unless they go the Earth X route. This article can shed more light on this if you’re interested.
Since we have the Silver Surfer, then we can assume that the main antagonist is Galactus. It also means this movie probably will not be an origin story (like the 2005 film).
Thoughts on Casting
The casting isn’t terrible. We have two Star Wars alums playing two members, Pedro Pascal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The other two members (Susan and Johnny Storm) I don’t recognize. Pedro Pascal is, of course, Din Djarin from The Mandalorian, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach was Arvel Skeen from Andor.
It’s going to be hard to do better than the casting for the 2005 and 2007 films, in my opinion. I liked Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Christ Evans, and Jessica Alba. Especially Jessica Alba. We won’t talk about the train wreck that was in 2015. Don’t get me wrong, I love Pedro Pascal and I think he’ll make an excellent Reed Richards. It’s the rest of the cast that leaves me cautiously optimistic.
There is no mention of Dr. Doom however, John Malkovich is listed in the cast. He would be an amazing Dr. Doom but he’s a little old (72) to be playing a much younger character. Paul Walter Hauser is also on the cast list with an unspecified role (at the time of this writing) and he is about the right age. Given his performance in Black Bird, he could also pull off a really good Dr. Doom [EDIT: I just remembered, Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU and he is Doom]
What do you think of the trailer?
