Skeleton Crew – Episode 1 & 2

It’s exciting to have a new Star Wars series to talk about. The first two episodes of Skeleton Crew are finally here (and a day early). Monday night will not be the new release cycle, starting next week the series will resume the typical release pattern (i.e. Tuesday nights at 9 pm EST). I will be sure to point out any fan service/easter eggs. Let’s get started with Skeleton Crew – Episodes 1 & 2.

Feel free to skip around if you prefer.

Setting Expectations for Skeleton Crew

Jude Law in Skeleton Crew

We are only a week away from the next Star Wars streaming show. I’m sure it will be ripped apart and ridiculed by TFM. They can’t help themselves but watch something they hate just so they can complain about it online. I plan to watch it with an open mind and complete enjoyment. Before the series starts I’d like to take a moment to set expectations for Skeleton Crew.

This series takes place five years after Return of the Jedi; at about the same time as The Mandalorian. Since this show takes place during “the Mandoverse”, it’s possible we may see some of these characters again in upcoming projects (i.e. Mandalorian & Grogu). The series stars Jude Law and has the essence of The Goonies in space so I think it might appeal to us GenXers. I get the impression that this show will be tailored toward a much younger audience. It won’t be as dark and foreboding as the other series. We will probably see more witty characters and the occasional silly gaffe to entertain the younger generation.

I do expect to see some “fan service” for the older generations of fans in the form of cameos and Easter eggs. I’ll try to provide episodic recaps to help point out those fun moments.

The Skeleton Crew will be 8 episodes with the first two premiering December 2nd (was December 3rd) at 6pm PT on Disney+

Final Skeleton Crew Trailer

This will be the last official trailer before the series premiers next month. I think I’ve said this before, this show looks like it will be something fun to watch. It should remind us of what drew us to Star Wars as a kid while drawing more young fans in.

For those of us who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, this will feel like Goonies in space … and I’m here for it! This will be part of the official canon but I’m guessing we won’t see a lot of direct ties to the Skywalker Saga. I do expect a few Easter eggs/fan service elements.

I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be fun.

Skeleton Crew Trailer

Little was known about this project, and still not much has been revealed. We know Jude Law is a key character and we know it centered around kids. At D23, Lucasfilm finally released the trailer and here it is.

I’m definitely getting Goonies vibes from this trailer, which I’m here for. As a Gex Xer, Goonies is a staple childhood film. This also feels tailored for a much younger audience, which I think is great. Most of the live-action series have a lot of adult themes so it’s good to have something for the kids.

I don’t know where in the timeline this series is happening. If I had to guess, given the way the kids talk about the Jedi and the flashes of broken-down Imperial druids, it’s probably post-Return of the Jedi.

I’m sure a tidal wave of new information will be coming about this film over the next several months.
