I’m late posting my 2023 goals. January (and 2023) has not been off to a great start. Be that as it may, let’s set those goals. Unlike the typical fate of New Year’s Resolutions, I actually make some progress on my goals for the year. I feel like I’m not carrying over any baggage from 2022 except for maybe a few extra pounds (which I hope to rectify quickly in 2023). Let’s get on with it!
As usual, I will cover three main areas for my goals; Professional/Technological, Reading Challenge, and Health Goals.
Professional & Technological Goals
This goal needs the most attention of all of the goals I am setting for this year. Professionally (and personally) I need to learn some new technology. I was supposed to focus on Reactjs last year and it just took a back seat to something more important I needed to learn for work.
It has also been suggested to me that I check out React Native. I will assume that learning one may help bolster the ability to learn the other. Since I have an active interest in updating my personal site sooner, then I will be diving into Reactjs first. However, I need to find a system for keeping me on task. Maybe I need to set a personal deadline for at least an initial deployment of the new site.
I might look into the SmartThings integration again. It’s possible, however, that the technology has advanced far enough now that it makes integration with the old Raspberry Pi obsolete and/or deprecated. Perhaps new avenues will need to be pursued. This means I also need a new idea for that old Raspberry Pi, assuming I cannot integrate it with the iPhone and SmartThings.
2023 Reading Challenge
Last year I had to reduce my reading challenge goal to 12 books because of the length of a couple of books on my list. However, I did make progress on my “read again” list. In fact, let’s post an update to that list:
Kubrick’s Game- The Inheritance Cycle
Lunar Chronicles*- Harry Potter
- Divergent Series
- Thrawn Trilogy (OG/Legends)
- The Dresden Files (after I’m caught up)
- Lord of the Rings
- Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
The asterisk for Lunar Chronicles is there because while I haven’t quite finished reading the last book, I have less than 20% left. So it gets pre-emptively struck off the list. I have also begun reading The Dresden Files again; I started the year by reading the first book.
The real focus this year will be reading the Inheritance Cycle again as I’ve heard Christopher Paolini (the author) and Disney are in talks to make a series. It will be MUCH better than the movie from 2006 (don’t watch it!).
2023 Health Goals
This category also needs some focus. I struggled late last year to keep working out every day. I am still struggling (although this past week has left me devoid of motivation). My goal is to return to running the Flying Pig, but probably the 10k. Next year will be when I hope to try the half marathon.
The cold weather is a real motivation killer. I have an indoor exercise bike but that’s a really boring workout. Also, in order to start dropping some weight I may have to change my diet. It seems reducing quantity is no longer providing sufficient results; it might be time to start cutting other things out or cutting back (ex: sugar and sodium intake).
I think those are going to be my (main) 2023 goals (who knows what small things might get thrown in there as the year progresses). Good luck with your goals and I hope you have a great year!
