James Luceno autograph

I’ve had this book since Star Wars Celebration III (circa 2005). I actually met James Luceno (in fact this book is a signed copy), he’s a great guy. This is also the book that I began reading last year and I was 40% away from completing to hit my 2020 Reading Challenge. I should have pushed myself harder to finish but November and December is always a busy time of year. Be that as it may, I’m always a sucker for some backstory, especially in the Star Wars universe. While I’m not aware of all the books that take place in the prequel era, this book is potentially as far back as I’ve gone in Star Wars canon (aside from the KOTOR games), with the possible exception of Dooku: Lost Jedi.

Biggs’ Synopsis and Review

Supreme Chancellor Valorum’s trade route taxation policies are highly criticized. So much so that attempts have been made on his life. A particularly nasty syndicate, called The Nebula Front, seem to be involved with these assassination plots. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, and his padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, attempt to track down and thwart these terrorists before they succeed.

As I mentioned before I love backstory content, perhaps that’s part of the reason I’m such a fan of the prequels. Without giving away too many details, this book describes the events that lead right up to the beginning of The Phantom Menace. I really enjoyed reading more of the adventures of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, Palpatines continued manipulation of the events and some fun, new characters.

HMDYK About John Hollis

about John HollisHow much do you know about John Hollis? Many of you are probably asking “WHO??!” because he is probably pretty obscure but a cool character from Empire Strikes Back. He is Lando’s cybernetically enhanced aide, Lobot. His birthday was back in November and several Star Wars Facebook groups shined a light on him in celebration of his life. He passed away back in 2005 but Lobot is a cool character so I will happily talk a little bit about John Hollis.

His Life and Career

I’m unable to find a lot of information about his personal life. He was born Bertie Lyn Hollis in London and he was married twice. He is the father of Sarah Hollis Andrews who is a former English child actor and continues her acting career under the name Holly Hamilton.

His acting career spans 71 credits. It seems he’s most known as Lobot in Empire Strikes Back, however he’s been in a couple of other recognizable films and tv series. He was in four of the six episodes of the Doctor Who Mutants story arc. He plays a bald, wheelchair-bound villain in the opening sequence of For Your Eyes Only but he isn’t credited. Apparently there were legal disputes over the rights of Thunderball. His final television appearance was in 1999, six years before his death.

He seems to always play the minor roles; from a German porter in “The Dirty Dozen” to a Krypton elder in Superman I and II. The connotation of a minor role doesn’t exist in Star Wars. In fact I’m inclined to argue there are no minor roles in Star Wars. While nobody pays any attention to John Hollis in any of his other roles, Star Wars fans still acknowledge his spot in the universe. So much so that we honored him on his birthday.

Is there anything you would like to share about John Hollis?

The Mandalorian: Chapter 16

The Mandalorian: Chapter 16Title: The Rescue
Director: Peyton Reed

Peyton Reed is back to direct the season finale. It’s another amazing piece of television! I was conflicted leading up to this week’s episode; I’m excited to see what happens but this is also the last episode. It’s hard to believe it has already been eight weeks; but what a wonderful and extraordinary Christmas gift from Disney, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau.

Last week Din Djarin had a bit of a tongue-in-cheek message for Moff Gideon. Now it’s time to make good on that promise. The question is who helps Din rescue Grogu and what season finale predictions come true.

Also, THERE IS A POST CREDITS SCENE!

Ten Star Wars Projects Announced!

Ten Star Wars ProjectsOn December 10th Disney held their investor day which is when the Disney Corporation announces it’s major plans and projects. Obviously Disney+ is about to increase its library, dramatically. In case you missed it, TEN Star Wars projects were announced!! I was inundated and overwhelmed with so much exciting information I could barely contain myself.

There are literally hundreds of posts and articles out there discussing these projects. I’m sure you can go read some of the other official posts but I’m writing my bit about it anyway because it’s my blog. I am using the official announcement as my source for these projects. I think most of these are all going to be limited series; probably one season of 10-12 episodes, but I’m cool with that.

The Mandalorian: Chapter 15

The Mandalorian: Chapter 15Title: The Believer
Director: Rick Famuyiwa

Well folks, here we are at the penultimate episode of season 2; next week will be the season finale. Rick Famuyiwa is back in the directors chair. In season one he directed episodes 2 and 6. Din has some new, unexpected allies and he’s calling in favors with some old friends. He’s a little ticked with the Empire so the rescue is in the works.

I enjoyed this one, though its a little slower when compared to the previous two episodes. However this is the episode that sets up the finale so you don’t want it to steal the thunder. There are a few surprises in this episode but before I get into those …

The Mandalorian: Chapter 14

The Mandalorian: Chapter 14Title: The Tragedy
Director: Robert Rodriguez

Chpater 14 is directed by Robert Rogriguez, a new director to the series. He’s known for El Mariachi, Machete, Sin City (both movies), From Dusk Till Dawn (movie and series) and, apparently, someone is always shot in the head. Rodriguez does an amazing job, it’s a pretty intense and heart pumping episode.

Din Djarin is on his way to the ruins of an ancient Jedi temple as he continues his quest of uniting “the child” with his own kind.  The title is ominous, and rightfully so but I can’t get into that right now. In fact, it might be the time for this …
