The MMO Times: Here Come the Browncoats!

mmotimesheaderIssue 60: Greetings! Have you been diligent with your gaming resolutions? Are you excited for a new year of new titles, new content and expansions? The news for some of those titles and expansions are starting to roll in and some of the news is pretty exciting depending on your taste in MMOs.

This issue has some more information about Marvel Heroes, TERA and Age of Wushu. There are also some new titles to read about including Cryptic’s new title, Neverwinter and a some news for those that are big fans of Firefly.

The MMO Times: All About the Pandas!

mmotimesheaderIssue 59: Happy New Year Gamers! Welcome to 2013! I hope all of you had a safe and splendid Christmas and New Years. I’m sure many of you probably killed off a few brain cells and hopefully you recovered well and with no guilt.

There hasn’t been a lot happening recently, this issue mostly consists of Mists of Pandaria patch 5.2 updates. There are a couple of non-WoW updates here such as Marvel Heroes but I think the Christmas and New Years holidays probably attributed to a lack of interesting news. WoW fans can rest assured though that there will be a Blizzcon 2013 and talks and rumors are already starting. Read on and game on!

The MMO Times: HoHoHo, Merry Christmas!

mmotimesheaderIssue 58: Greetings Gamers! This will be the last pre-apocalyptic and pre-Christmas issue so I hope you enjoy the headlines because they could be your last (or the last for this year). So if you’re waiting on a queue, the servers are down for maintenance or you are taking a break from making Armageddon plans check out what we have this week.

We have some new content coming to The Secret World and SWTOR. Some more information on upcoming titles such as Age of Wushu and Marvel Heroes. There is also some interesting news about an old MMO coming back online (which I don’t think has ever happened before). Perhaps an encouraging sign for other MMOs that we have lost over the past couple of years. There is this and more so read on and game on, friends!

The MMO Times: The End Is Nigh!

mmotimesheaderIssue 57: Good News Everyone! The end of the world is upon us! Those silly Mayans have predicted that the world will end next Friday because that’s when there calendar ends. Makes sense to me. So if you’re not hiding in some bunker somewhere or seeking protection from some mystical mountain in France, check out these headlines. You can take comfort in knowing that even though these games exist in a virtual, fictional world, there is more fact in these headlines then any prediction from an extinct civilization.

Funcom is taking the “end of the world’ lightheartedly with a video made by their creative director that resulted in a pleasant surprise for folks that enjoy that MMO. New game updates for SWTOR, more cool “ninja stuff” for Age of Wushu and more. Read on and game on, friends!

The MMO Times: Help Sandy Victims!

Issue 56: Hello again, Gamers! The Christmas season is in full swing and with only 18 days left, assuming the world doesn’t end in two weeks, I hope you have all your Christmas shopping completed, or nearly completed. We have some good stuff in this issue. One of the key headlines I want to point everyone too (especially if you are playing World of Warcraft) is the new pet store pet whose sales help Sandy Victims.

And speaking of Blizzard they are already talking patch 5.2 which is estimated to be 2-4 months away. There is also more Aion, Elder Scrolls Online and Age of Wushu news. The news for Age of Wushu seems to be increasing as we approach that February 1st release date (which is now less than two months away). There should be lots here to wet the proverbial appetite so read on and game on, friends!

What If Your MMO Shutdown

Last week the MMO community bid farewell to a much adored game, City of Heroes. I remember when CoH came out and I knew several people that were playing it. I had friends that would often return to Paragon City when they were bored with World of Warcraft. I never played City of Heroes but I considered it many times. It looks like Massively did a good job broadcasting the final sign off as the servers were shutdown for the last time (you click here to see the video if you want, its a little over an hour and a half.)

Every time I read about a title shutting down I often think about what I am currently invested in. While I am still in the process of returning to SWTOR, I still play WoW quite regularly. I often hypothesis what I would do if Blizzard suddenly announced that they had to shutdown all of the WoW servers permanently. It would be heartbreaking because I have made quite a few friends. I have been in the same guild for over 7 years and most of those friends have been there just as long as I have.

If the servers were to be shutdown forever the only thing I could think to do would be to start visiting some of my favorite locations in Azeroth and start amassing a ridiculous collection of screenshots. I’d probably do every raid and dungeon in the game. Screenshots of all my toons, my various pets, mounts, etc. Most importantly I would be taking screenshots with everyone from the guild. I would definitely have to post these images in a gallery somewhere and give everyone access. Perhaps even keep the website alive so we can all touch base every now and again.

I’m sure many of us would move on to another game, but I doubt if I would invest the same amount of time and energy. I think doing it once is enough for me, doing it again would be akin to madness. It’s really difficult to say what I would do especially when its hypothetical. In fact there is a greater likelihood that life will be the reason I stop playing before all the WoW servers go offline but you never know what tomorrow brings.

So what would you do if your game ended?
